Christiana Care Designated As Bariatric Surgery Center Of Excellence

A pig in lipstick.
"Christiana Care Health System announced that it has been named a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence® by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and Surgical Review Corporation. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery. "
What an honor!

Being rewarded for doing malpractice well.
"This accreditation for a three-year term means that Christiana Care, in conjunction with the surgeons of the Christiana Institute of Advanced Surgery, has met the required standards after a rigorous site visit by Surgical Review Corporation to review clinical practices, patient outcomes and facility compliance with American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery standards."
Except the standard of informed consent, that is.

There is more about one of the ringleading organizations in this malpractice at the end of the article.

First read the stated guidelines for the malpractice known as bariatric surgery.

Then consider that since all expert diets are designed to fail. This makes any prior attempt at dieting as a prerequisite for fat person surgery a hoax. (see here, here, here and here.)

Then read about the organization to learn more about your executioners.

BTW, the malpractitioners are killing your kids, too.

Sue them.

'Remote Control' For Fat Metabolism Discovered In Brain

The oxymoron of the morons:
"A system in the brain already known to regulate food intake also serves as a direct 'remote control' for the way fat is stored and metabolized in the body, say University of Cincinnati (UC) researchers. "
This is a new and interesting concept - the direct remote control.

Whoever thought that up likely has separated contiguous thoughts.

Whatever.

Here is the gist of this approach to assaulting you. Or so the researchers claim.
"The group studied the melanocortin system at the molecular level in rodents. They found that when the system is stimulated to increase activity, fat is metabolized. When activity in the system is reduced -- either pharmacologically or genetically -- fat accumulation increases. "
Interestingly, if fat people increased activity without drugs, their fat would be metabolized.

Imagine that.
"'We were able, in essence, to change traffic signals in so-called nutrient highways in the body so that calories were metabolized, and not dumped into fat cells,' says Tschöp. 'And we did this without changing the rate of food intake.' "
Interestingly, if fat people increased activity without drugs, their fat would be metabolized "without changing the rate of food intake."

Imagine that.

Just keep telling yourself that the same people who are intending to control your brain and genetics cannot cure toenail fungus.

And don't trust a single one of them for an instant.

Being Overweight Or Obese In Old Age Does Not Increase Risk Of Cognitive Decline According To Study

No, "Being Overweight Or Obese In Old Age Shows Increased Cognitive Decline When The Fat People Were Younger."

That's how they got fat.

Maybe "being overweight in old age does not lead to memory problems."

Arguably, it is because of young age "memory problems" or "cognitive decline" that they got fat.

They were not thinking right or forgot to stop eating at a younger age.

Weight Management Programme Stresses The Positive Experience Of Eating

More crap.

Virtually every overeater "Stresses The Positive Experience Of Eating."

These research morons should "Stress The Positive Experiences Of Caloric Intake Control and Fitness."

Are All Calories Created Equal? A New Study Shows A Serving Of Almonds Can Help You Feel Full, Without Leading To Weight Gain

The answer to the Calorie question is "Yes."

As to the other matter, look who sent out this press release:
"The Almond Board of California welcomes the participation of all industry members and does not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, marital status, religion, age, disability or political beliefs.

http://www.AlmondsAreIn.com"
They can be trusted, just like the Purdue researchers. (see here and here)

Obesity myths

Dumber and Dumberer.

This is an instance of two men fighting moron a moron.

In one corner you have Paul Campos.

In the weight debate, perhaps the only slitherer lower than the sick care and diet professionals in their capacities as sick care and diet workers is this lawyer, Campos.

You decide.

He is a professor. So was Ward Churchill. You decide.

He is at the University of Colorado. So was Ward Churchill. You decide.

It appears to me as if the U. of Colorado is the Yale of the West. You decide.

Campos's deal is basically his claim that it has never been proven that fat people either consume too many Calories or burn too few Calories or that being overfat is bad.

If Campos represented the innumerate, his deal would basically be that since there has never been a "1" discovered in Nature, then it cannot be concluded that "1 + 1 = 2."

Like any "good" attorney, Campos turns the truth on its head to confuse the public into believing that an unreasonable doubt is reasonable.

Like any "good" con, Campos turns the truth on its head to confuse the public into believing that an unreasonable doubt is reasonable.

You decide what is happening.

Kelly Brownell is fat.

He hides this fact. Like any "good" con, he hides the truth. You decide what is happening.

He is another Yale weight loss expert. He is in "good" company. (see here, here and here)

This LA Times piece is so ridiculous that, again, but for the fact that people suffer and die from this stuff, it would be laughable.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to your experts.

If you are the least bit concerned or incensed, contact the LA Times and complain about this crap.

Like others in the media, the LA Times is your executioner.

One Off Weight Loss Subsidy Is Just A Bandaid, Australia

At last, an admission of truth.
"The Association says more money needs to be put into obesity management..."
Here is the crux of the matter.

Money.

And where will the money go? To the "Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA)," no doubt. Or so they hope.
"Vice-President of the Dietitians Association of Australia, and Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian, Ms Julie Dundon, explained, 'Australians need long term, evidence based approaches to losing weight and keeping it off and to related chronic diseases or we are just putting bandaids on problems that need stitches. People who are overweight or obese often have other health problems like diabetes and heart disease or they are at very high risk of developing them. So it is critical they are also assessed and managed by qualified health professionals.'"
Note "qualified health professionals," which these dietitians clearly are not, though they claim to be:
"The Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) is the professional body representing dietitians nationally. Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) is the only national credential recognised by the Australian Government, Medicare, the Department of Veterans Affairs and most private health funds as the quality standard for nutrition and dietetics services in Australia."
This is hubris as all the "evidence based" data show that the battle against overweight/obesity is being lost and the dietitians, nutritionists, doctors, trainers, etc., have been around for decades.

Their solution?

Give us more money for the slam bang jobs we have been doing thus far.

Who do they think they are demanding more money for poor results?

CEOs?

The solution is to cut-off the money to these parasites and starve them so their bad advice can die, allowing the rest of us a chance to live.

A beneficial effect will be weight loss among dietitians, nutritionists, doctors, trainers, etc., many of whom are overfat.

Stopping the money flow can be a win-win.

This October, The American Physical Therapy Association's National Physical Therapy Month To Focus On Nation's Obesity Epidemic

Here is where stupid intersects with depraved.
"For the nearly 100 million Americans who are overweight or obese, physical activity must be a crucial component to weight loss and better health, which is the focus of October's National Physical Therapy Month, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) announced today...

A lack of exercise is a major contributing factor to obesity rates. 'People who are overweight or obese must follow an appropriate exercise program that includes aerobic conditioning and avoids exercise that can lead to injury,' notes Terry Michel, PT, DPT, DSc, CCS, a physical therapist at Boston's Mass General Hospital. 'Physical therapists will typically recommend a low-impact form of weight training, such as exercise bands that help avoid excessive joint stress, and modified yoga stretches and Tai Chi for promoting flexibility and relaxation,' she adds."
Not only is the value of "exercise" for weight control vastly overrated, but now you need a paid specialist to coach you on how to burn a minimal amount of Calories.

Depravity.

This sucking sound you hear is the money being vacuumed from your wallet.

What's For Dinner Mum? UK

More stupid Brits.
"Mothers of teenage children feel that outside factors such as fast food and peer pressure are undermining the 'gold' standard of nutrition that they strive to provide at home."
Right.

Fat parents setting a "gold standard of nutrition."

That'll happen.

And what an extensive study was performed by these psychologists!
"Interviews were carried out with 15 British mothers who had children aged 13-16 years. All of the interviewees were highly motivated to give their child a healthy diet. The interviews revealed that all mothers described a gold standard of healthy eating, which involved a balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables."
A whole 15 people!

Their computers must have overheated crunching that data.

And "highly motivated" interviewees. There can be no selection bias here.

What is most important is parents blaming others for their lack of ability to be parents.

They must have been "highly motivated" enough to blame others, but not "highly motivated" enough to parent well.

It has to be "fast food and peer pressure."

It cannot be the parents.

No way. Never. Nope.

Remember: finger-pointing is always fun until someone loses an eye.

Australian And New Zealand Dietitians Reach Mutual Recognition Agreement

The sucking sound you hear are the bellies of fat Aussies and Kiwis being held in now that they can get twice as much bad advice as before.
"DAA President, Ms Julie Hulcombe, said, 'This agreement will open up opportunities for dietitians on both sides of the Tasman and will help advance nutrition and dietetics in both countries through the sharing of knowledge and expertise. We are delighted to have worked with our New Zealand colleagues to achieve this Charter.'"
You gotta love "the sharing of knowledge and expertise" part.

As if there is secret diet "knowledge" to share and as if they are so successful that they have any "expertise."

Stupid is clearly both in control and out of control.

Dietitians Urge Kids to Read Food Labels

This is useless or worse.

Since food labels are bad, what is the point?

BTW, note that these kids are not learning to analyze a food label, they are being taught to recognize certain select characteristics which may not lead to weight control.
"Another shopper, Sofia Rachi, 10, said she always reads foods labels and likes to look at the colored boxes, but when pressed, the youngster admitted she didn't 'really know what to look for.'

Though the labels can be tricky even for adults, some nutrition experts say it is reasonable for children to grasp the concept by focusing on a few components."

I would like to see them estimate serving sizes.

Wouldn't you?

Any bets on their success?

Researchers Discover Gene Mutation Thought To Control Energy Levels

More proof that the overweight/obesity research world is insane.
"University of Ottawa medical researchers have discovered a mutation in a gene that is widely considered to be the major controller of energy levels in our bodies."
How do you "discover" something that is "widely considered"?

Doesn't this imply that it was already discovered so it could be "widely considered"?

Okay, maybe they are referring to the mutation.

Whatever.

It is useless. Nothing will trump The Laws of Thermodynamics re: overweight and obesity.

This is simply more waste.

Motivational Weight Loss Game Where Everyday Moves May Inspire A New Addiction To Aid Fitness

Will never work.
"The lack of daily mild exercise is largely responsible for the world's obesity epidemic, according to James Levine, a Mayo Clinic physician and leading authority on obesity."
Levine is a moron. Eating more Calories than you burn is the only cause of overweight and obesity.
"Levine coined the 'NEAT' term to cover all physical activity that is not conscious exercise."
So-called NEAT is trash.
"Ioannis Pavlidis, a UH computer science professor, and research assistants Yuichi Fujiki and Kostas Kazakos, have developed a computer game that translates physical activity into video games, such as races and logic puzzles. Dubbed Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT-o) games, they can be played on any hand-held personal digital assistant (PDA) with users wearing a lightweight, wearable sensor that detects movement like running, walking, bending over or even foot tapping. "
Video games, eh?

These fools should first explain how all the fat people sitting in front of their monitors playing video games are not as slim as Kate Moss.

Remember, Mayo is the same place that recommends The Executioners' Diet.

Avoid the experts and their schemes.

But time it right.

Like before they harm or kill you.

Rising Cost Of Obesity Threatens NHS, UK

It's everywhere. It's everywhere.
"Widespread obesity is draining NHS resources, say a new independent report commissioned by health policy think-tank the King's Fund."
At least everyplace where people are making the mistake of paying for the results of bad decision-making by fat people.
"'With escalating numbers of people - including growing numbers of young people - being diagnosed, now is the time for action.'"
"Now is the time for action"? Hello.

The best action is to turn off the money spigot.

Stop paying for rescue and stop paying for research.

Let the offenders pay for the results of their behavior.

Silence the diet and fitness experts since they are killing us. (see here in general and here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here.)

Prosecute the diet and fitness experts for their lies, misinformation, health advice, etc.

Provide people with correct weight control and fitness information. (see here, here, here and here, IMHO)

Then watch overweight and obesity and nutritional child abuse plummet.
"Sir Derek Wanless, the report's author, warns that the unnecessary expenses incurred by the health service will continue to soar if the UK's rising level of obesity is not curbed."
At least Derek gets that these expenses are "unnecessary."

Now what is he and what are we going to do about it?

Intriguing Structures On Surface Of Fat Cells Play Key Role In Regulation Of Fats

More bull from The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Nowhere does this "research" report show that "Intriguing Structures On Surface Of Fat Cells Play Key Role In Regulation Of Fats."
"The surface of fat cells contains many small pockets called caveolae (because they look like caves in an electron microscope). Although their role is not clear, Paul F. Pilch and colleagues review in the October issue of the Journal of Lipid Research current knowledge about caveolae and conclude that one of their major functions is to regulate the movement and production of fats in fat cells. Caveolae may also help the hormone insulin bind to fat cells, but this is controversial.

Insulin binds to protein receptors on the surface of a fat cell, which activates proteins inside the cell that help lower the amount of sugar in the blood and store fats. Some scientists have shown that insulin receptors attach to caveolae, hinting at a possible role of caveolae in insulin function, but other scientists have disputed this finding. Also, scientists have suggested that caveolae can be absorbed inside the cell, forming spherical vesicles that may carry fats for storage in the cell.

Caveolae may also be involved in regulating the amount of fatty acids the molecules resulting from the breakdown of fats present in fat cells."
"Role is not clear," "may also help," hinting at a possible role," may carry fats" and "may also be involved."

Liars.

A Balanced Diet Is A Healthy Diet

More lies, damn lies, statistics and nutrition "information."
"People are confused about what foods they can eat and are not sure what a healthy balanced diet looks like, reveals a new survey by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

These findings coincide with the launch of the new eatwell plate, a practical tool that cuts through the array of conflicting messages around food and reminds us what a healthy diet is. It helps people make confident choices about what they eat by clearly showing the types and proportions of foods that strike a good balance."
A balanced diet is a balanced diet. No more, no less. It can be a healthy diet. It can also be an unhealthy diet.

In fact, just about all overweight/obese people got fat, i.e., less healthy, on a balanced diet.

By definition, a balanced diet is one where you get your Calories from all three of the macronutrient groups: fat, carbohydrate and protein.

This is to be distinguished from diets where you cut out some macronutrient, like the awful ketogenic diets, e.g., Atkins' or South Beach.

A healthy diet is one that results in a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 (for virtually all of us, some athletes appear to be exceptions).

No more, no less.

How you get there is your choice.

That is the state of the art.

That should be your goal.

As should avoiding all expert diet and fitness advice.

How Nutrition Affects The Breakdown Of Fats

Clearly unproven conclusions.
"Scientists report in the October issue of the Journal of Lipid Research that when either lean or obese individuals exercise after eating a high fat meal, their fats are broken down and oxidized in skeletal muscle, making them healthier."
There is not one sentence in the report proving this scheme made someone "healthier."
"These results show for the first time how a high fat diet and exercise stimulate the breakdown of fats and may help design ways to reduce excessive fat in the body."
Didn't show squat.

If you want "to reduce excessive fat in the body," eat fewer Calories than you burn for a while.

If you want to remove noise from your life, do not believe any of the swill spouted by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Better yet, remove all overweight/obesity research data from your life.

Alternate Day Fasting: How Good Is It For Your Health?

Really confused researchers alert!
"Krista Varady and colleagues studied the effects of alternate-day fasting on 24 male mice for four weeks. To assess the impact of ADF on the health of the mice, the scientists not only tested mice that followed and didn't follow an ADF diet, but they also studied mice that followed the diet only partially: a group of mice consumed 50 percent of their regular diet every other day (ADF-50%) and another consumed 75 percent of their regular diet every other day (ADF-25%)."
Okay.
"The scientists noticed that the mice that followed the complete ADF diet (ADF-100%) lost weight and that the fat cells of both the ADF-100% and ADF-50% groups shrunk by more than half and by 35 percent, respectively. Also, in these two groups of mice, fat under the skin but not abdominal fat was broken down more than in mice that did not follow the diet."
So they lost weight on the complete ADF diet. Got it.
"These results suggest that complete and modified ADF regimens seem to protect against obesity and type 2 diabetes but do not result in fat or weight loss."
So they did not lose weight on the complete ADF diet.

Huh? What's with that?

Which is it?

Then there is the fat cell shrinking thing.

If they did not lose fat, where did it go?

BTW, the research never answers the question "Alternate Day Fasting: How Good Is It For Your Health?":
"More studies will be needed to confirm whether the long-term effects of ADF regimens are beneficial for health and reduce disease risk, the scientists conclude."
Deceptive people.

Folks, gotta stop funding this trash.

Obesity Surgery Can Improve Sleep And Reduce Snoring, US And Spanish Studies Conclude

Nope.

More lies from the malpractitioners of bariatric surgery.
"Two studies presented at the annual Congress of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) in Stockholm have revealed that obesity surgery (known to specialists as bariatric surgery) may have important advantages beyond its primary objective of major weight loss. It can significantly reduce, or even eliminate, interruptions to breathing (apnoea) during sleep. Sleep apnoea can cause snoring and is a recognised risk factor for cardiovascular disease."
It is simply the weight loss that "significantly reduce(s), or even eliminate(s), interruptions to breathing (apnoea) during sleep."

If the weight was not lost the apnea would not go away.

When the weight is regained (which is common), POOF!, the apnea returns.

It is not the surgery. It is the weight loss.

This is the marketing hype the malpractice known as bariatric surgery employs in order to mutilate you and your children.

Woman's death calls gene therapy into question

The next time some moron talks about medical treatments for the non-medical problems of overweight and obesity or mentions gene therapy, think about this:
"A few hours before she died this summer at the age of 36, Jolee Mohr lay in a Chicago hospital so swollen by internal bleeding and her failing kidneys that her husband decided against bringing their 5-year-old daughter to say goodbye. The girl wouldn’t have recognized her mother.

Robb Mohr couldn’t bring himself to watch her die and he spent his wife’s last hours talking with her helpless and puzzled doctors. One vowed to get to the bottom of the illness...

...Jolee Mohr fell ill the day after her right knee was injected with trillions of genetically engineered viruses in a voluntary experiment to find out if gene therapy might be a safe way to ease the pain of rheumatoid arthritis. She was dead three weeks later."
Oops.

Here is what a good, caring, compassionate doctor has to say about the matter:
"Dr. Theodore Friedmann, who once headed the NIH committee that oversees gene therapy experiments, said developments in medicine often come with problems, even death.

Even if gene therapy is found to be the cause of Jolee Mohr’s death, Friedmann said, the method remains promising.

'There’s no question that this event is tragic for the family and the woman involved,' he said. 'It does simply point to the fact that we have a lot more to learn.'”

At the expense of your life. All because you eat more Calories than you burn.

Then there is this:
"There have been more than 800 gene therapy studies involving 5,000 U.S. patients since the NIH approved the nation’s first human gene transfer study in 1989. Yet there are no approved therapies despite 17 years of research, and the only major success — a cure for the rare inherited immune disorder known as 'bubble boy disease' — came with a high cost: leukemia linked in 2003 to the virus that delivered the treatment."
Don't forget the poor sick care workers who apparently got PTSD from the affair. They were "bothered."
“'The human side to this is awful — it bothered everybody on the team,' Hogarth said. 'We’ve all unfortunately been around it, but this one just seemed even sadder, because she didn’t have a life-threatening illness to begin with.'”
Of course, it you are older, it is okay if you die since it won't cause any gene therapy sick care worker PTSD from witnessing something "really bothersome."

“'To see someone who is otherwise young and otherwise healthy — that I think is the part that is really bothersome,'” he said.

Just a suggestion.

You might want to either think twice before you stuff your pie-hole or die like stink in some gene therapy experiment.

Children Caught In Web Of Junk Food Promotion - New Cancer Council Report Exposes Marketing "Trickery", Australia

Apparently, down under, parents are as irresponsible as they are up over, and the apologists are the same, too.
"Parents fighting childhood obesity must compete with clever and pervasive junk food marketing pitched directly at young children, according to an independent study conducted for The Cancer Council Australia.

The Cancer Council is calling for regulation of junk food marketing to children to reduce an expected obesity-related surge in future cancer incidence, with the new research emphasising how extensively food companies promote their unhealthy products to young children and use imagery to convey a false association with health and fitness."
If there is a "false association" then it must be stopped.

Just as the "clever and pervasive junk science marketing pitched directly at parents and children" by the diet and sick care industries must be stopped. (see here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here.)

The problem is that there is no known association between health and fitness except at body weight.

And body weight, for all practical purposes, depends on Calories in vs. Calories out, not the source of the Calories. (see here, here, here and here.)

Leave it to the experts to screw it up for businesses and consumers.
"Chair of The Cancer Council Australia's Nutrition and Physical Activity Committee, Terry Slevin, said the new report, Food Marketing to Children in Australia, showed the extent to which food companies directly advertise to children, rather than to their parents.

'Use of online games, quizzes, competitions, cartoon characters, print advertising, premium prizes, toys and other marketing trickery makes promotion of unhealthy food a complex web that often goes undetected by parents who are doing their best to encourage healthy eating,' he said."
"Their best"? Where do the kids get the money to spend on this stuff?

Perhaps a publicly funded study is necessary.

"Best" has been vanity sized to fit poor to mediocre.
"'Our findings suggest that, despite these policies, most of the products promoted to children - and recalled by children - were those high in sugar, fat and salt,' Professor Jones said. The report concludes that Australia's current regulatory arrangements around food marketing are ineffective in helping to control consumption levels of foods that have a negative impact on the health of Australian children."
So don't purchase the stuff.

This would be the best "regulatory scheme" of all.

And the only effective one.

Brits 'dying not to do exercise'

Likely the same for all of us.
"Most UK adults are so unwilling to exercise that not even the threat of an early death is enough to get them off the sofa, a survey suggests.

Only 38% of people questioned by YouGov said they would do more exercise if their life depended on it."

There is, interestingly, a fortunate and heartening willingness stated by the unfit public:

"A greater inspiration was exercising to change body shape, particularly among women and young adults.

Almost a third of 18 to 24-year-olds reported they would do more exercise if they saw an unflattering photo of themselves or were told they looked fat."

Whether they would really do this is another matter.

The only reason to train is to control the distribution of lean and fat in the body, i.e., lose fat, gain muscle.

These = look better. (Did you know the American Heart Association tells us not to get fitter in order to look better?)

The other reasons for "exercise" are trash and lies.

They are malicious fantasies conjured by the experts to keep us fat. Ruses to make us think they are necessary when they are the problem.

This is the propaganda of the Mehmet Ozs, Jorge Cruises, David Katzs, Oprah Winfreys (and here), David Zinczenkos and the other experts of the world.

Ladies and gentlemen, you have seen the enemy and it is our diet and fitness experts.

They are the executioners of you and your children.

Wise up.

Drunks 'should pay for treatment'

So should fat people.

Why the NHS struggles with obesity

The problem all sick care systems face.
"Obesity has once again been pinpointed as a major problem facing the country.

Former NatWest bank chief Sir Derek Wanless, who has already carried out two reports for the government on the NHS, is now warning the issue could overwhelm the health service."

Here are a few of the absolute solutions that can be applied now, all of which use off-the-shelf, currently available methods:

  • Recognize that overweight and obesity are not medical problems
  • Get that is is all about Calories in and Calories out. Nothing else. Stop making excuses.
  • Recognize that overweight and obesity are not issues that will respond to the tools of medicine
  • Cease funding for all medical efforts directed at the issues of overweight and obesity
  • Cease funding for all medical "care" directed at overweight and obesity
  • Cease funding for all research directed at combating overweight and obesity
  • Allow people the benefit of experiencing the consequences of their actions
  • Make businesses collect greater sick care insurance contributions from their overweight or obese employees to reflect their increased burden to society
  • Enforce CAPTA (especially as it relates to parents and mandatory reporters)
  • Prosecute diet gurus, their publishers and the media who expose diet and fitness lies to the public
  • Prosecute diet gurus, their publishers and the media for practicing medicine without a license by offering health advice as it relates to body weight
  • Prosecute those in the medical establishment, including providers, nutritionists, dietitians, Big Pharma, medical centers for malpractice in providing bad diet advice
  • Forbid the "health food" industry from claiming its products are "health foods" in the context of the weight debate
  • Get Oprah off the air. And do it fast. She is clearly a big, fat threat to national health.

Once you stop paying for this crap and utilize existing measures, you'll be pleased by the amount of resources saved that can be applied to much better purposes.

Problem solved.

Next.

No Link Found Between The Amount Of Soft Drinks UK Children Consume And Their Body Weight

A study that could not be less important if it tried.
"Soft drink consumption has increased in both the USA and the UK over the years and this has often been blamed for a rise in childhood body mass index (BMI). However, many of the review methodologies investigating the alleged links have been flawed. A recent scientific analysis of a nationally representative sample of children's diets and lifestyles found no link between the amount of soft drinks children consume and their body weight."
Nor could it be more wrong.

Not necessarily in its direct study conclusions (though those might be hokum), but in its secondary pronouncements:
"The reasons for obesity developing and continuing in children are complex, including both diet and lifestyle."
Wrong.

The reason, there is only one, is no more "complex" than Calories in and Calories out. And it can never be more "complex" than that.
"The solution to obesity is also unlikely to be as simple as reducing individual food or drink products."
Wrong.

"The solution to obesity is" certainly "as simple as reducing individual food or drink products" so as to consume fewer Calories than are burned."

There can be no other.

Pathological Gamblers Addiction Targeted By Health Food Supplement

But will it work for Calorie addiction? Or excuse-making addiction? Or nutritional child abuse addiction? Etc.
"In a recent eight-week trial, 27 people were given increasing doses of the amino acid, N-acetyl cysteine, which has an impact on the chemical glutamate -- often associated with reward in the brain. At the end of the trial, 60 percent of the participants reported fewer urges to gamble."

Healthy claims fool diners into eating extra

Leave it MSNBC, the massive storehouse of nutritional bull crap, to blame everyone but the diners.

As if these diners are "fooled" into eating extra.

Right.

Or as if their arms are being twisted.
"People who opt for a meal at a 'healthy' restaurant often consume more calories than they would dining at fast food joints that make no health claims, a new study shows."
Incidentally, this can bootstrap into an argument against providing nutritional data for restaurant food as people are not smart enough to understand their meaning.

Here is a big duh.
"The researchers found that individuals underestimate the calorie content of foods served at restaurants they see as healthier, to a degree that could easily lead to weight gain."
People always underestimate Calories in and overestimate Calories burned.

Fat people in particular have a very bad relationship with caloric truth.

This has been proven ad nauseam.

Too bad that we cannot prove it ad "it makes me so sick that I stop eating."

When it comes to weight loss, there is no such thing as "healthy food."

It is all about the Calories.

Nothing more. Nothing less. Nothing else.

Teens’ unhealthy weight hurts later fertility

Blessing in a muumuu.
"Teenagers who are either underweight or obese are likely to have fewer children in adulthood, a study has found."
If true, this will lead to fewer nutritionally abused children. A good thing.
"Given the increase in obesity rates around the world, the researchers note, the current findings suggest there could be widespread effects on adults’ reproductive health."
Keep your fingers crossed.

Particularly when the legs of fat women aren't.

Models 'should show health proof'

There is a better focus.

Sick care workers, i.e., doctors and nurses, "should show health proof."
"London Fashion Week models should be asked to prove they do not suffer eating disorders, a report says."
No.

Big 'ol, fat 'ol sick care workers should show that their overweight and obesity do not compromise health.

Oh, they cannot?

You mean since by definition overweight and obesity are associated with poorer health they cannot "show health proof" or only proof of poorer health?

First get these pigs off from the hospital and clinic floors.

Then deal with the catwalks.

Hypocrites.

Barely 3% Of 11 Year Olds In UK Do Enough Exercise

Another example of where failing strategies get you - to failure. Duh. What did you expect?

"Barely 3% of UK children aged 11 are doing enough exercise, when they should be spending at least one hour a day doing some form of physical activity if they want to minimize their chances of developing diabetes type 2 or becoming obese later on in life, says an article published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood (BMJ)."

If anyone wants to "minimize their chances of developing diabetes type 2 or becoming obese" or overweight, do not use exercise as a primary means.

It will not work. (see above, here and here.)

Use caloric intake control.

It is the only reasonable and lasting way.

But do not follow expert diet advice. That cannot work.

Use training to distribute your weight between fat and lean.

"Exercise" is almost always useless. (see here, here and here.)

And expert exercise recommendations are worse than useless.

They are harmful.

Grant To Aid Obesity Research

Thieves.
"UT Southwestern Medical Center's obesity research team has received a $22 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to enhance its groundbreaking efforts to attack obesity from every angle, from studying fat cells to developing medicines."
"Every angle" except the one that will work, that is.

Wanna bet $22 million that they will not research simply consuming fewer Calories than are burned?
"The award, which has been formally announced, is one of nine interdisciplinary research consortia sponsored by the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research. These groups seek to solve difficult problems by blending approaches from multiple biomedical research disciplines."
Well, what do you expect from NIH, the government's child mutilation and abuse machine.
"The money, to be given over five years, fortifies UT Southwestern's Task Force for Obesity Research, a team of scientists and clinicians who are investigating the behavioral, molecular and metabolic mechanisms behind obesity and metabolic disorders.

'This extends and strengthens our task force's ability to conduct studies to gain much-needed insight into the key molecular pathways that govern energy metabolism and translate that into the development of new approaches to prevent obesity and treat associated metabolic complications, such as heart disease and diabetes,' said Dr. Jay Horton, associate professor of internal medicine and molecular genetics and the grant's coordinating investigator."
"Much needed"?

No.

Absolutely unnecessary.

It is only "much needed" by researchers who want to survive on the research equivalent of the public dole.

And we let them.

Shameful.
"The grant comes at a time when waistlines are bulging. Two-thirds of adults in America are overweight or obese, raising their risk of developing health maladies including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, fatty liver disease and others.

But the reasons why obesity and these conditions go hand-in-hand are largely unknown."
The reason is people are too fat. On the rare occasion when they lose weight, these conditions go away.

Waiting for other "knowledge" delays the fix and will make no practical difference.

End of story.

Take back the money before it is wastefully spent.

Children With Obese Mothers Have 4% More Body Fat Than Children With Normal Weight Mothers

Another example of fat parents as child abusers.
"There are several factors which contribute towards a child's risk of becoming obese, but a major one is if the mother herself is obese, according to an article published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood (BMJ)."
Another example of clearly stupid researchers.
"Whether or not the explanation for their findings comes down to genes, lifestyle or what happened during pregnancy, the authors did not know."
Another example of missing the fat forest through the fat trees.

It's all about the Calories, stupid.

New Research From America On The Move Foundation Indicates American Weight Loss Efforts Stalling

As if it makes a difference.
"America On the Move Foundation (AOMF), a national non-profit organization, released new research that indicates efforts by Americans to lose weight might be stalling. The results, released in conjunction with AOMF's Steptember 2007 celebration, show that in the past four years, the number of Americans trying to lose weight has declined by 14 percentage points, from 73 percent in 2003 to 59 percent today."
In a very real way this can be good news.

Since diets fail with near certainty, the fact that people are jettisoning them may be a sign of intelligence and not stupidity.

Though this is unlikely to be the reason, it can serve as a means to highlight the frustration of people who want to lose weight but cannot since expert diet advice leads them straight to failure.
"The research also indicates that building social networks might be crucial to regaining momentum: though 74 percent of Americans agree it is important to have a support network of family and friends when trying to lose or maintain healthy weight, only 40 percent say their immediate family members encourage them to eat healthy and nutritious foods. Fewer than two in 10 Americans (16 percent) report their close friends encourage these same choices."
The above was another myth borne of the extremity of dieting.

Because diets are so difficult, as in impossible, we cannot do them without a support group. Someone has to be the Calorie cop.

But this is not necessary and acts as a barrier to diet success.

Diets are simple. It is expert diet advice that makes weight loss difficult.

What we do not need are people who act as obstacles, e.g., "friends" who dissuade us from success and diet experts who make diets insurmountable.

This is different from a support group.

We also do not need hare-brained conclusions from the experts:
"'As obesity continues to rise at an alarming pace, these results show that Americans do not have the support they need to make healthy changes,' said James O. Hill, Ph.D., AOMF co-founder and professor of pediatrics and medicine at the University of Colorado and Health Sciences Center. 'In September and throughout the year, AOMF is committed to providing social networks that encourage and support Americans who are making small changes to lose or maintain weight.'"
This is a Hill of crap. A mountain actually.

Forget the experts, they are the cause of diet failure.

And these are the results.

Take 'em down.

Study: Pollution Raises Exercise Risks

I guess this means the end of the ubiquitous truck stop fitness center so many of us patronize.
"Exercising in areas with high levels of diesel exhaust and microscopic soot particles is especially risky for people with heart disease, according to the first study in which heart patients were directly exposed to pollution."
Safety tip: avoid fitness centers in Sweden and the UK where you are put in a chamber attached to an exhaust pipe:
"Researchers in Sweden and the United Kingdom tested 20 men aged about 60 who had survived a heart attack at least six months earlier, had blockages cleared and propped open with a stent, and were getting treatment to prevent a second heart attack. The researchers noted they only tested men with stable heart disease and good tolerance for exercise, and monitored each closely to ensure none suffered any health problems.

On two separate occasions, each man was put in an enclosed chamber for an hour and exposed to either diluted diesel exhaust or clean, filtered air. They rode an exercise bike for two 15-minute periods and rested in between. The men had electrodes attached to their bodies to monitor the heart's electrical activity, like what happens in a standard heart stress test.

While exercising and exposed to diesel exhaust, the men experienced drops in the heart's electrical activity two to six times greater than when they were breathing filtered air. Those reductions indicated the heart muscles were not getting enough blood. "

Drugs And Devices In The Clinical Management Of Obesity Worldwide

All because fat people never met a Calorie they didn't like.
"The obesity treatment market worldwide is set to grow enormously, and will reach 6.4 billion by 2015."
Or weren't willing to give a second chance/helping.

Arena Pharmaceuticals Continues Phase 3 BLOOM Obesity Trial Following Independent Echocardiographic Data Safety Monitoring Board Review

This is heartening.
"Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ARNA) announced that an independent Echocardiographic Data Safety Monitoring Board (the Board or EDSMB) found no reason to stop the ongoing pivotal Phase 3 trial, BLOOM (Behavioral modification and Lorcaserin for Overweight and Obesity Management). The BLOOM trial is evaluating the efficacy and safety of lorcaserin hydrochloride for the treatment of obesity. The findings of the Board were based on a planned detailed review of unblinded echocardiograms performed after patients completed six months of dosing in the trial. The review was conducted by the Board and confirms that differences, if any, in the rates of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-defined valvulopathy in patients treated with lorcaserin and in the control group did not meet predetermined stopping criteria. The review also confirmed that the rate of FDA-defined valvulopathy in the placebo group is consistent with the company's statistical powering assumptions used in the design of the pivotal trial program to monitor patients for any increased risk of developing valvulopathy. Arena is currently in discussions with the FDA to finalize protocols for two additional Phase 3 pivotal trials scheduled to begin later this year."
Whew. That's a mouthful.

In other words, this drug is worrisome enough that the hearts of those involved in the trial required evaluation and that the evaluation for valve disease did not show enough problems to stop the trial, i.e., not enough people died or got sick to stop it.
"'There is a clear need for novel, safe and effective treatment options to address the growing problem of obesity, which poses a serious long-term threat to the health and welfare of tens of millions of people in the United States alone, including the majority of people with type 2 diabetes,' said William R. Shanahan, M.D., Arena's Vice President and Chief Medical Officer."
Hey, Dr. Shanahan, the safest and most effective treatment for obesity is called fewer Calories in than out. That will fulfill the need.

Have you ever heard of that approach?

Oh, I see, you cannot make a buck that way.
"'This safety review of the lorcaserin echocardiographic data allows for continued development of this promising compound, which seeks to address weight loss by selectively stimulating a specific area of the brain associated with the control of satiety and metabolism. I am hopeful that future data will prove this approach to be the type of additional tool we need in the fight against obesity.'"
So you are mucking around in the brain, eh?

Remember folks, these are the same people who cannot cure toenail fungus.

Americans spend most on Lipitor, drug survey finds

A best-seller this statin for a country that's fattin':
"U.S. consumers spent more money on the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor -- more than $9 billion -- than any other prescription drug in 2004, according to federal estimates released on Wednesday.

Cholesterol drugs in general raked in the most money for their makers, according to the survey by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

While adults of all ages spent more on Pfizer's Lipitor than any other single drug, the survey found Merck and Co's Zocor was second with $4.7 billion in sales."

Many fat piggies went to pharmacy,
Many fat piggies had statins delivered at home,
Many fat piggies had roast beef, gravy, mashed potatoes, dessert, and more,
Very few little piggies had none.
And Many fat piggies went...
"Wheeze, wheeze, wheeze" all the way home...

New Approach To Fighting Obesity And Diabetes

There is a reason that all we can do is foolproof and not idiot-proof things - idiots are too ingenious.

Here are some idiots.
"World-first equipment, made exclusively for UQ scientists, will determine how to produce food which is better for us, but still tastes good."
Get this technobabble:
"Starch and non-starch polysaccharides, which are important for fibre, have amazingly complex structures which are very hard to characterise.

'For example, the units in a single molecule of a component of starch, are like the branches on a very convoluted tree, and a given food sample is like a huge forest of trees of all different sizes and structures.'

New instrumentation, manufactured in Germany for UQ, will overcome the difficulties of measuring such a complex structure.

'No other equipment can separate 'trees' of all sizes simultaneously, and at the same time measure quantities such as the weight, branching density and number of 'trees' of a given size.'

The equipment recently arrived at UQ and is in the Hartley Teakle Building on the St Lucia campus."
Unplug the machine.

Just eat fewer or burn off more Calories.

A Chocolate Cookie A Day Puts 20 Lbs On An Energetically Balanced Kid In Four Years

Impossible. From " UNIVERSITY OF GRANADA COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT."

It is impossible to be in an energy balance and gain weight, just as it is impossible to be in an energy balance and lose weight.

To gain or lose weight, one must be out of balance.
"Prof. Martínez de Victoria insists that the best way to control body weight is to combine a limited food intake with regular physical exercise. In this sense, he states that with a 500 to 700 calorie deficit, depending on body weight, age and physical exercise, a person can gradually lose 6.5 lbs a month..."
This is a numerical impossibility. (see here and here)

Time to invade them again so they stop spouting this nonsense.

Purdue Researchers Click Nutrition With Camera Diet Study

Dumb digital dieting.
"A Purdue University team plans to help health-conscious people better gauge what's on their plates by using their cell phone cameras."
Steve, do I see the fPhone coming?

Here is how it claims to work, but will not.
"Currently, dieters can subscribe to online sites that monitor eating habits by critiquing photos they send of their meals. The idea offers busy people the chance to get nutritional feedback without spending time writing down all of their meals, drinks and snacks.

'This idea of using cameras to evaluate your diet by snapping pictures of your meals is not a new one," Boushey said. "What makes our proposal different is that we're designing the software to better evaluate portion sizes and nutritional content...'"
Here is the team:
"Edward Delp, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and an expert in image analysis, will be working to create a reliable method for estimating the sizes of food in the photos. David Ebert, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, will primarily be responsible for techniques to help confirm the portion sizes of the food in pictures. Kyle Lutes, an associate professor in the Department of Computer and Information Technology, will put his experience with hand-held computing devices to work by designing necessary programming. "
Besides needing sophisticated terrain mapping software to determine the peaks and valleys in the mashed potatoes, density analysis capabilities, sniffer technology and programs for determining the presence of butter and sour cream, temperature sensors for evaluating the volatilization of fragrant molecules and other high-tech stuff, people have to be willing to order food, input data, get served, wait to eat and then make alterations.

(DoD, TSA and HomeSec would love to get their hands on the aforementioned technology, I wager.)

What could possibly go wrong in a Rube Goldberg scheme like this?
"Evaluating food intake without the hassle of diet journals could impact American health, she said. "
Yes.

Negatively.

Purdue is the same institution of lower learning that brought us the "four-year degree with a concentration in" personal training.

This is clear proof that Purdue students are "special needs" cases, because only "special kids" would need 4 years to learn something so simple.

These researchers must have graduated from Purdue or fulfilled the lowest percentile requirement for appointment to the faculty.

How else can one explain their stupidity?
"'We're committed to figuring out the details,' Boushey said. 'Diet is one of the most difficult exposures to measure in terms of how it contributes to disease. People are so confused about diet these days. We want to offer good advice to the public so they can stop throwing up their hands and saying, 'I'm going to eat whatever I want.'"
Rest assured, their efforts will lead to more trouble.

"Good advice" from these folks is an impossibility.

U.S. study finds jump in drug injury reports

Moebius medicine.

The drugs you take to relieve the pain of injury cause injury for which you may take drugs to relieve the injury which will cause injury...
"Reports of deaths or injuries related to drug treatments more than doubled between 1998 and 2005 in the United States, with painkillers and immune-system boosters accounting for most, researchers said on Monday."
Maybe if people stopped anesthetizing life the numbers would drop.

And injury from diet drugs? This will link you to FDA's approved label for Xenical.

Bring more than a diaper and change of clothes.

Being Slightly Overweight Or Obese May Increase Heart Disease Events Risk Independently

Really "moderately overweight" is the condition per this study.

Apparently just telling it the way it is just won't cut it for these researchers:
"Regardless of traditional cardiovascular risk factors, such as Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Levels, if you are moderately overweight or obese you are likely to have a raised risk of developing coronary heart disease events, according to a report published in Archives of Internal Medicine (JAMA/Archives), September 10 issue."
And more crap:
"The authors wrote 'Because of the high prevalence of overweight and the expected future increases, it is essential to gain precise insight into the consequences of overweight for health and into the metabolic pathways that link the two.'"
"Essential"? Hogwash.

"Precise insight"? Never during our lifetimes.

The thieves want more money to research "the metabolic pathways that link" "overweight and health."

The pathway (singular) is known and direct - more Calories in than out lead to overweight and increased health risks.

Period.

Blood pressure rising among U.S. children: study

More nutritional child abuse.
"The study, published this week in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, adds to a growing body of evidence linking swelling juvenile waistlines with rising blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems."
Lucky for these parents and guardians that they live in a country where these bad deeds go unpunished.

Unlucky for the rest of us since we have to pay to clean-up their mess.

Unlucky for the unfortunate, abused kids.

Innovative Ways To Rehabilitate People With Bad Health Habits

Innovative ways to lie about your research from the crooked folk at Northwestern University.

They have no concept whether any of these "innovative ways" will "rehabilitate" anyone:
"As with all participants, Hesemann's recordings in the Palm Pilot and contact with the personal coach gradually tapered off over the four-month period of the study. This latter period is when it gets interesting for Spring. She's waiting to see who falls off the wagon.

"It's really hard to maintain a new healthier lifestyle," Spring said. "At first it's novel and exciting and then the novelty wears off. You tend to revert back to the old habits. There's kind of an inertia that pulls you back."

Spring is anxious to see which two behavior changes best helped people maintain their healthier habits. But she won't know the results until the study ends in 2008. "
Remeber, there are lies, damned lies, statistics and overweight/obesity research.

Some companies penalize for health risks

More good news.
"A small number of companies have linked health factors to what employees pay for benefits, but the practice is expected to grow now that some federal rules have been finalized, spelling out what's allowed by law...

The businesses are deducting from employees' paychecks, adding insurance surcharges or offering insurance discounts or rebates only to low-risk workers."

Of course, the article's title is a lie, which is to be expected.

These fat folk are not being "penalized." They just got used to paying less than their fair share for elevating the risk of the insurance pool. Now they are crying elephant tears.

In all likelihood, they should be paying more. Lots more.

Hopefully, they will.

FDA Considers Additional Food Labels

Bad news, good news.

First the bad news - FDA Considers Additional Food Labels

Now the good news - "
Any action is likely years away."

Ark. obesity reports reduced amid concerns

Cowards complicit in continuing child abuse.

Period.

'Skinny Gene' Does Exist, UT Southwestern Researchers Find

So they claim.

Some people claim Elvis is alive.
"Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found that a single gene might control whether or not individuals tend to pile on fat, a discovery that may point to new ways to fight obesity and diabetes."
Pursuing this will more likely "point to new ways to" kill, injure or harm people.

Remember, this finding "might control whether or not individuals tend to pile on fat."

Not that it does.

Also, it might be involved in other processes.

For example, it "might" negatively affect the ability to think.

In fact, just being exposed to it appears to have already had that effect on the researchers and reporters.

According to the article:
"'People who want to fit in their jeans might someday be able to overcome their genes.'"
Cute.

Maybe the cancer that "might" result will cause weight loss.

It could happen.

And they will not see it coming.

Arguably this is a high and stupid price to pay for a better fitting piece of clothing.
"Dr. Graff said the next step is to understand better the exact mechanisms by which adipose exerts its control. "
In our lifetimes, the likelihood of them ever understanding the "exact mechanisms" is close to zilch.

Knowing the other effects of this gene and the "exact mechanisms" are zilch.

It is time to stop all genetic and other research into overweight and obesity and just go for the mother lode.

It is time to research stupid and find a way to cure that.

Clearly, extincting stupid will have more and far-reaching effects, including cessation of stupid research and treatment endeavors.

All positive outcomes.

Maternal Weight Linked To Child Body Composition

Another aspect to the bad research from the previous article.

Just to show how in a hurry people are to get valueless noise out there to make the unimportant seem important:
" A rapid release version of this paper has been published on-line and will appear in the October 2007 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, a publication of The Endocrine Society."
Besides unimportant research, we have here an unimportant Endocrine Society.

Children Whose Mothers Are Overweight Are More Likely To Have Higher Levels Of Body Fat Themselves At Age Nine

Will the stupid, meaningless, inconclusive studies ever stop?
"'A previous study showed that babies are born with a higher amount of amount of body fat if their mothers were significantly overweight during pregnancy, and we wanted to see whether that relationship persists into childhood,' comments Dr Gale...

...Although the extent to which this is attributable to genetic factors, the influence of the mother's lifestyle on that of her child, or to physical changes to the child's fat mass brought on by their mother's 'adiposity' during pregnancy, is not yet known.

...The results of this research show that a mother's over-nutrition before and during pregnancy may have a persisting and long-term influence on her child's tendency to fatness."
No, they will not.

Not while there is still one dollar left to be stolen in the name of obesity research.

Obesity link to surge in lethal throat cancer AND Oral sex can cause throat cancer

You figure out if and how these stories are related.

Here are the links:
Obesity link to surge in lethal throat cancer

Oral sex can cause throat cancer

Sugary Drinks, Not Fruit Juice, May Be Linked To Insulin Resistance

Apparently they deserve an "A" for honesty, still why bother doing the study?
"Their findings suggest that higher consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks, but not 100 percent fruit juice, may be associated with insulin resistance, even in otherwise healthy adults.
But:
"Although this observation might be due to the additional nutrients or other phytochemicals found in the juices, Jacques notes this also may be a consequence of the healthier lifestyle and dietary habits of fruit juice consumers. They were less likely to smoke than non-consumers, and consumed diets relatively lower in saturated fat and higher in total fiber.

Despite these results, Nicola McKeown, PhD, corresponding author and scientist in the Nutritional Epidemiology Program at the USDA HNRCA, does not advise increasing consumption of fruit juice...

Jacques and McKeown also caution that their results cannot be used to determine cause-and-effect relationships among caloric and non-caloric sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and insulin resistance. 'It could be that people who drink sugar-sweetened beverages have other unhealthy behaviors that we did not account for,' says McKeown."
Small wonder people are confused.

The issue is clouded by any conversation beyond Calories in and Calories out and then the useless research has uncertain conclusions.

What a waste.

Ban Ultimate Fighting As Well As Boxing, Says BMA, UK

This is not about the boxing and ultimate fighting thing.

It is about medical killers gone wild.

Here is an example of the pot calling the kettle black, but on steroids.
"'Ultimate fighting can be extremely brutal and has been described as 'human cockfighting'. It can cause traumatic brain injury, joint injuries and fractures.

'This kind of competition hardly constitutes a sport - the days of gladiator fights are over and we should not be looking to resurrect them. As doctors we cannot stand by while violent fighting tournaments are allowed to take place. Large amounts of money can be earned by participants, promoters and others linked to ultimate fighting but no amount of money can compensate for permanent brain damage and premature death. As a civilised society we should be campaigning to outlaw these activities.'"
By the way, sick care is "extremely brutal." Think of what sick care workers do: amputate, medicate, inoculate, exenterate, irradiate, eviscerate, enucleate, to mention a few.

Are you feeling the love and warmth of sick care, yet?

Sick care also "can cause traumatic brain injury, joint injuries and fractures."

All on a mass scale.

Whether I am in favor of or opposed to boxing and/or ultimate fighting is immaterial.

What is material is that these physicians who are:
ruining the lives of millions with their ill-conceived diet advice (yes, the NHS in the UK is as stupid as the rest in their diet recommendations),
mutilating people by the thousands with their unnecessary, unindicated and clearly malpractice, obesity surgeries,
drugging people by the tens or hundreds of thousands with their harmful pills and
killing people by the many, many, many thousands as a result of their recommendations,
have the audacity and unmitigated gall to even suggest that a sports competition where consenting adults knowingly engage in a legal activity should be banned is so farcical it would almost be humorous were it not for the bodies of all the patients and non-patient dieters sacrificed by them in the name of crappy sick care and bad diet advice.

What should be banned are the mass killers of the BMA whose patients stand no chance of surviving their recommendations.
"In 2005 the World Medical Association [WMA] stated that 'Boxing is a dangerous sport. Unlike most other sports, its basic intent is to produce bodily harm in the opponent. Boxing can result in death and produce an alarming incidence of chronic brain injury. For this reason, the WMA recommends that boxing be banned.'"
The carnage of boxing is the needle in the haystack of deaths from expert dieting and diet advice.

It is clearly expert diet advice whose "basic intent is to produce bodily harm." (see here, here, here, here and here and read this and this, for starters.)

Hey, BMA, WMA, *MA, get your own houses in order first.

Until then, shut up.

SNA Report Shows Progress In Implementation Of School Wellness Policies

Another skirting the "of no value" issue, press release.
"A report released today by the School Nutrition Association (SNA) tracks implementation progress of wellness policy topics including nutrition education, physical activity and nutrition guidelines."
Note "implementation progress," not effectiveness.

What is most telling is this piece of chest thumping:
"'School nutrition professionals continue to play a leadership role in the ongoing trend toward developing healthy school environments through the implementation of local wellness policies,' said SNA President Mary Hill, SNS. 'Schools are meeting their responsibility and stepping up to the plate to promote healthful eating and physical activity among children.'"
Besides being bull, where were these "school nutrition professionals" all these years while kids were getting fat on their watch?

Eating Together As A Family Creates Better Eating Habits Later In Life

Just notice, not a single word about how big and fat the students were.

This is a good example of how wrong-thinking dietitians and other "nutrition professionals" are.
"More than 1,500 students were surveyed once during high school and again when they were 20 years old to determine the long-term effects of family meals on diet quality, social eating, meal structure and meal frequency. Participants were asked questions such as how often they ate family meals, how much they enjoyed sitting down to a meal with family or friends, if they had a tendency to eat on the run and how often they ate breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The researchers found eating family meals together during adolescence resulted in adults who ate more fruit, dark-green and orange vegetables and key nutrients, and drank less soft drinks. Frequency of family meals predicted females would eat breakfast as adults. For both sexes, frequency of family meals as adolescents predicted eating dinner more frequently as adults, placing a higher priority on structured meals and a higher priority on social eating. For women, eating together as a family more often during adolescence meant significantly higher daily intakes as adults of calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin B6 and fiber. Among males, eating as a family more during adolescence predicted higher intakes of calcium, magnesium, potassium and fiber as adults."
"Better eating habits"?

Don't bet your (big?) butt on it. Not proven.

Investigational New Drug Application For 'Fat Melting' Injections Cleared By The FDA

Confidence inspiring.
"Treatments most properly called injection lipolysis have been commonly associated with the terms mesotherapy or fat dissolving "Lipodissolve." These types of treatments claim to reduce or eliminate unwanted local accumulations of fat, but their ingredients and injection locations and techniques may vary slightly. There is also no standardized, consistent, and accepted injection protocol or chemical formulation, with many formulas being proprietary, and without scientifically valid studies documenting their safety or effectiveness or comparing one another. Injection lipolysis involves the injection of various compounds into the subcutaneous fat, but is not currently approved by the FDA for subcutaneous injection for any purpose."
This is the level of care - no "scientifically valid studies documenting their safety or effectiveness" - when it comes to certain fat therapies.

Caveat emptor.

Or avoid living a life of caveat-ing, and eat fewer Calories than you burn.

You have the choice. Be stupid or be smart.

Canadian And US Dietitians Provide Up-To-Date Guidance On Dietary Fat

Bull.

They provide speculation.
"How much fat should be included in a healthy diet? How can one avoid trans fats? Are omega-three fats good for your heart? These are some of the questions on the minds of consumers when trying to make healthy food choices. Find the most up-to-date and trusted advice on these and other fat and health-related issues in the latest joint position paper - Dietary Fatty Acids - released by Dietitians of Canada (DC) and the American Dietetic Association (ADA). "
The advice is not to be "trusted."

It needs to be scrutinized.
"'It's the joint position of DC and ADA that the body needs fat for many important functions, so including some fat is an important part of a healthy eating pattern. About 20-30 percent of energy needs should come from fat...'"
And what if you only consume 15% of you Calories from fat? Or 10%? Or 35%?

Fact is, they do not know.

Weight loss and weight gain are governed by Calories In and Calories Out and, from a Calorie standpoint, the source is of little importance when it comes to putting on or shedding pounds.

Dietitians, like other experts, are part of the problem, not the solution, for the overwhelming majority.

A Type Of Antioxidant May Not Be As Safe As Once Thought

Another example of the one step forward, two steps backwards dance.
"Certain preparations taken to enhance athletic performance or stave off disease contain an antioxidant that could cause harm."
How bad is the "harm"?
"According to new research at the University of Virginia Health System, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant commonly used in nutritional and body building supplements, can form a red blood cell derived molecule that makes blood vessels think they are not getting enough oxygen. This leads to pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a serious condition characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries that carry blood to the lungs."
PAH kills.

But that is not the point.

The points are:
"truth" in the fitness domain has a very short shelf life,
the "truth" is frequently unreliable,
the "truth" frequently changes,
one day's beneficial "truth" is the next day's harmful "truth" and
that we simply do not know enough about what we are doing when we stupidly use heroic efforts, i.e., surgery and drugs, for overweight and obesity.
Hormonal control, gene therapy, etc., guarantee even more harms.
"'The more we understand about complexities in humans, the more we need to be aware of chemical reactions in the body,' said Palmer."
Palmer is right.

And until "we understand (more) about complexities in humans," we should stop screwing them up with useless, harmful, costly and complications-generating interventions for problems whose natural, absolute solutions already exist.

Gene Therapy: Is Death an Acceptable Risk?

Fair question.
"A 36-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis died in July, while participating in a gene-therapy clinical trial. Some experts say she shouldn't have received such an unpredictable, potentially dangerous treatment in the first place."
Just like what they want to do to fat people.
"The tragedy highlights the ethics of testing risky therapies on patients whose ailments are not life-threatening and are controlled by other means."
Like being a fat person where the absolute cure is, and will always be, fewer Calories in than out.

The Brain And Intriguing Insights Into The Physiological Basis Of Obesity

Glad they're "intrigued."

How about doing something useful instead of entertaining yourselves?
"The past decade has witnessed an explosion of information regarding the role of the central nervous system (CNS) in the development of obesity and the influence of peripheral, hormonal signals that regulate CNS function to regulate food intake and metabolism."
Clearly, not "information," but noise.

The best conclusion they could come up with?
"Together, these exciting presentations suggested potentially useful avenues of future research, which will hopefully provide improved preventive and therapeutic insights."
Nothing of value. Just empty "hopes."

Fat: An Active Player In The Regulation Of Many Processes In Health And Disease

The excuse-inators are crawling out of the woodwork.
"Why should we be interested in doing obesity related research? Emphasis is put on this type of research simply because of the fact that the epidemiological data and predictions are alarming. Worldwide it is estimated that one person in every eight is overweight and more than 300 millions are obese. For a definition of overweight and obesity see Table 1 at the end of the press release."
Despite the good question, the answer clearly does not address it. In fact, it intentionally avoids it.

Why?

Because there is absolutely no data to suggest that this "research" will either make "the epidemiological data and predictions" un-alarming or will not create new problems.

And there never will be since all medical interventions are associated with complications.

Here is more techno-babble to further confuse the matter.
"Adipose tissue is no longer seen merely as a mostly passive energy storage organ but is now also considered to be an active endocrine tissue that by producing a variety of cytokines, hormones and other proteins impacts on a multitude of physiological and pathophysiological processes in the human body. The adipocyte, whose size and numbers are increased in obesity, is the cellular factory that produces these proteins termed adipokines."
Of note is the admission that fat tissue is more complex than previously thought.

This is the excuse they will repeat when people fail treatment and/or are injured/killed.

There are more incomplete understandings to come.
"In conclusion we suggest that knowledge of regulatory mechanisms, which impact on the production of adipokines and on adipose tissue development and growth is instrumental to develop and improve strategies for combating not only obesity but also cardiovascular disease."
In conclusion, these folk don't know squat that is useful.

In conclusion, all fat people are fat because they consume more Calories than they burn.

In conclusion, no therapy will ever change this.

In conclusion, no research will ever alter this.

In conclusion, we know exactly how people get fat, we know exactly how to lose weight.

In conclusion, it has NOTHING to do with any medical intervention.

In conclusion, wise up and consume fewer Calories than you burn to lose weight if you want to succeed and not become a victim of medical and scientific mythology.

One man's genes show DNA is still a mystery

Why you care...

If you were hoping for the failures at curing toenail fungus to come up with a genetic cure for your fatness, hope again.

It ain't gonna happen.
"The first detailed map of a man's genes shows the genetic code is even more complex than anyone thought. For instance, science still cannot pinpoint what makes a person's eyes blue.

Initial study of genome entrepreneur Craig Venter's own DNA map shows 4.1 million places where his genetic code is different from the basic "reference" human genome.

This is many more than had been expected, including big differences that extend far beyond the single-letter changes that account for much of the variation seen so far.

'I think the biggest surprise is we are lot more different from one another than we thought,' Venter said in a telephone interview.

But there are still some mysteries."

You bet your life there are.

Don't bet your life.

BTW, they're just as bad at hormones as they are with genes. Don't let the experts near you.

Commission And UEFA Joint TV Campaign Promoting Physical Activity

Besides being an idea doomed to fail, the slogan seems dumb, too.
"The European Commission and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) are launching a joint TV advertising campaign that aims to encourage European citizens to make physical activity part of their daily lives. The advert encourages viewers to get out of their armchairs and be physically active, using the slogan 'Go on, get out of your armchair'."
As if.

Viewing Food As Healthy Often Encourages Overeating

No news here.

As I have been saying for years, it is not about "healthy foods."

It is about Calories In and Calories Out. Period.

And it will always be about Calories In and Calories Out. Period.

There is no "paradox" and the study is unimportant.
"An important new study from the Journal of Consumer Research explains the 'American obesity paradox': the parallel rise in obesity rates and the popularity of healthier food. In a series of four studies, the researchers reveal that we over-generalize 'healthy' claims. In fact, consumers chose beverages, side dishes, and desserts containing up to 131% more calories when the main dish was positioned as 'healthy'."
It is just another example of the operational characteristics and expected results of the predators feeding crap to a desperate and hopeful public.

And with the governments' (federal, state and local) complicity.

The crap in this case is the conversation that there is any relationship between "healthy food" and weight.

There is none.

There is a relationship between lying about it and profits.

And here is their Johnny-come-lately epiphany:
"As they explain: 'More generally, we need to think about food not just qualitatively (as in 'good food -- bad food') but also quantitatively (as in 'how many calories are in this meal?')."
Duh.

Bottom line, folks. IMHO, the sooner you realize that it is the:

Repeat Gastric Bypass Surgery - Without Cutting

Here is why this story has value. I have added the emphasis.
"Like a lot of patients who undergo weight loss surgery, initial results for Millie Coleman were astounding. She lost more than half her body weight - dropping from more than 380 pounds to less than 160. But over the years, the pounds and the anxiety began creeping back into her life...

With the stress of going back to college, Millie had put back on more than 40 pounds that she'd lost after her first surgery. Doctors say that's fairly common. Gastric bypass works by creating a pouch in the stomach to hold smaller amounts of food. Over time, it can loosen.

'The pouches can stretch out probably 10 to 20% over the course of 3 to 5 years,' says Dean Mikami, MD, at Ohio State University Medical Center.

Doctors often have to do follow up surgery to tighten up the pouches. But cutting the patient open again can carry a lot of risk."
Bottom line: you get the surgery, its results are temporary, you get fat again and need more surgery.

All this on top of the fact that bariatric surgery is malpractice.

U.N.: Malnutrition on the rise in Darfur

An excellent opportunity not to be missed.

Rarely does such an obvious win-win situation like this present itself.
"Malnutrition is increasing in Sudan's violence-wracked Darfur region along with lawlessness and the number of people fleeing their homes, a senior U.N. official said Friday."
As with so many other social issues, lip service is the usual form of payment, action is not. Here is the chance to act.

Assuming that "malnutrition" means caloric deprivation and not a dreaded diminution in selenium intake, for example, here is the opportunity.
Take:

the fat people who claim to be outraged by and in opposition to the situation in Darfur,

the fat people who claim they cannot lose weight because of their genetics,

the fat people who claim they cannot lose weight because of their hormones,

the fat people who claim they cannot lose weight because they are infected with some virus or otherwise possessed by a biologic agent,

the fat people who claim they cannot lose weight even though they "exercise and watch what they eat,"

the fat people who claim that they cannot lose weight even though all they eat are "salads,"

the fat people who have any excuse for being fat except that they overeat,

parents who are abusing their children by making them fat (maybe even send some fat kids on a student exchange program)

the researchers who claim people are fat because of any other reason except overeating Calories (e.g., hormones, genetics, infections)

the media people who continue to spout this bull in order to sell their product and the products that advertise through them

the "masterminds" behind the overweight and obesity epidemics (e.g., Oprah Winfrey, the ladies of The View, Dr. Phil, David Katz, Jorge Cruise, Mehmet Oz, Consumer Reports' editors, the folks at NIH, politicians who are going to "fix" the sick care system)

anyone who says that eating "healthy foods" is "the cure" for overweight and obesity
and designate them aid ambassadors and relief workers for Darfur.
Weigh them. Send them there. Put them to work providing aid and relief to the people of Darfur for say, six months. Weigh them.

Here is what I bet will result.

Weight loss.

The win-win?
The people of Darfur who have apparently been victimized by "a militia of Arab nomads known as the janjaweed," will have received aid and relief.

The fat people, will have lost weight.

The rest of us, will then be able to stop funding the stupid, wasteful research of the researchers, the malpractice known as bariatric surgery, the drug entitlements for the calorically rich, etc.

We will have enjoyed a hiatus from the blatherings of the researchers who were shipped to Darfur. (hoping that the media people work diligently to provide aid and relief and are less able to communicate their stupidity from Darfur)
Once proven that there is a relationship between Calories in and Calories out (which should be unnecessary but is because of all the crap out there), and that those in Calorie denial are mistaken (which is necessary because of all the crap out there), then we can apply the principle in a sensible manner here and elsewhere.

Don't squander the opportunity.

Carpe diem.

Health warnings on stairs could cut obesity

Likely won't, but a cute idea nonetheless. Someone was thinking partway. One question is, did the stair climbers eat more?
"Health warnings printed on flights of stairs, encouraging people to walk rather than take the elevator, could prove a potent weapon in the battle against obesity, researchers say.

Over the course of a six-week study researchers monitored the behaviour of 82,000 pedestrians.

Messages like "take the stairs" and "seven minutes of stair climbing daily protects your heart" were printed on stair risers in a UK shopping centre. This led to a 190% increase in the number of people passing up the stairs each day."

Now, if "care for your teeth" were printed on UK stair risers...
