Drug price controls may shorten lives: report

What could possibly be wrong here?
"Imposing European-style price controls on prescription drugs in the United States would result in modest cost savings that would be more than offset by shortened life spans as the pace of drug innovation slows, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday...

All five papers in the section were funded by a grant from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc."
'Nuff said.

Good news and bad on cholesterol levels: US study

Kudos, fatsos.
"Levels of 'bad' LDL cholesterol among adult Americans have fallen somewhat since 1980. However, harmful triglyceride levels have nearly quintupled over the same time period, according to research presented at the American Heart Association's annual meeting.

Research presenter Dr. Jerome D. Cohen of St. Louis University, Missouri, told Reuters Health that the falling LDL cholesterol levels may reflect Americans' greater awareness of the dangers of a high-fat diet, but the 'skyrocketing triglyceride levels' reflect the increasing prevalence of obesity, which Cohen described as a 'a true epidemic.'...

The problem is that more than one third of Americans are obese and two thirds are overweight. To lower triglycerides, it's weight loss, weight loss, weight loss,' Cohen emphasized. 'We need to eat less, eat better and exercise more.'

'We are going to be paying a price for this by an increase in deaths from heart disease,' Cohen said. While statins have contributed greatly to controlling high levels of harmful LDL cholesterol, 'we are reaching a saturation point of pill popping.' The costs of healthcare are going to increase, as well, he noted."
Right.

So, nutririonally fit people (i.e., not fatsos), better take a stand now against the fat majority who will make the rest of us pay for their caloric irresponsibility.

Costlier New Diabetes Drugs Don't Necessarily Produce Better Outcomes, Stanford Researcher Says

When Big Pharma meets Big Fatso.
"The annual cost of prescription diabetes drugs nearly doubled to $12.5 billion between 2001 and 2007, according to a study by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of Chicago. The researchers say the findings raise questions about whether the higher cost actually translates into improved care and better outcomes.

'It's important to recognize how expensive treatment for diabetes has become,' said Randall Stafford, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center and senior author of the study. 'This near-doubling of diabetes costs may partly reflect better care, but we need to step back and examine the value of newer and more costly medications that may be overused.'"
No surprise here.

Gestational Diabetes and Excessive Pregnancy Weight Gain a Harmful Combination

Kudos, fatsos.

Gestational diabetes is fat pregnant woman diabetes.
"Women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) who gain more than the Institute of Medicine-recommended amount of weight during pregnancy are at increased risk for undesirable perinatal outcomes, including macrosomia, preterm delivery and cesarean delivery, research shows. They are also more likely to require medical therapy to control their diabetes."
And these are associated with complications for the fetus, and later the infant, you abused in utero.

Proud of your fat self, you child abuser, you?

Physical Activity May Not Be Key To Obesity Epidemic

What we have been saying for years.
"A recent international study fails to support the common belief that the number of calories burned in physical activity is a key factor in rising rates of obesity.

Researchers from Loyola University Health System and other centers compared African American women in metropolitan Chicago with women in rural Nigeria. On average, the Chicago women weighed 184 pounds and the Nigerian women weighed 127 pounds.

Researchers had expected to find that the slimmer Nigerian women would be more physically active. To their surprise, they found no significant difference between the two groups in the amount of calories burned during physical activity.

'Decreased physical activity may not be the primary driver of the obesity epidemic," said Loyola nutritionist Amy Luke, Ph.D., corresponding author of the study in the September 2008 issue of the journal Obesity. Luke is an associate professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine."
It takes morons so long to get a clue.

Perhaps that is why they are morons.

Another reason to avoid the experts, who have been spewing harmful crap for years, and do weight loss and fitness right.

A Study Reveals The Anti Inflammatory Properties Of Virgin Olive Oil

"A Study Reveals Stupid Researchers And The Harmful Properties Of Virgin Olive Oil"

The Harmful Properties Of Virgin Olive Oil:
"Researchers from the Hospital Universitario Reina Sofía de Córdoba (University Hospital Reina Sofía of Córdoba, Spain) have carried out a study in order to determine the influence of the micronutrients of certain fats on cardiovascular diseases, diabetes or cancer, and if their consumption might modify the inflammatory process in healthy people. To this end, they have studied the consumption in diets with different fatty composition, based on extra virgin olive oil, nuts and butter, observing that extra virgin olive oil modulate on a downward trend healthy individuals' inflammatory levels, whereas a diet rich in nuts has an intermediate effect and the diet rich in butter exerts a damaging effect on inflammation mediators...

'...the main property of olive oil is its richness of antioxidants, which makes it a unique fat.'"
There you have it.

More about the killer antioxidants, which according to some studies, they kill you, give you malignancies, don't help your heart, don't lengthen your life and may shorten it.

Now for more proof that the researchers are stupid:
"High-impact international scientific journals specialized in the nutrition field such as the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism or Atherosclerosis have already echoed the results of this work carried out by the Lipids and Atherosclerosis Unit of the Reina Sofía University Hospital, under the direction of doctors Francisco Pérez Jiménez and José López Miranda, with the collaboration of the Laboratory of Experimental Nephrology and Vascular Pathology of the Jiménez Díaz Foundation."
"Already echoed..."

How is something "already echoed" when it comes first?

It is not.

Just as it is not certain that antioxidants are good for you.

Face it. They do not know what a "healthy" food is.

The Truth About Gyms

You won't find any truth about gyms in this article, except...
"MYTH TWO: 'New Year Joiners' tend to stop attending gyms within four-six weeks.

FACT: People who join in January and February are no more likely to quit than those who join at any other time in the year. Almost 66 % of members retained their membership for at least 12 months-up from 61% in 2001. While the average rate of member cancellations per 1000 is 36, down from 103 in 2000[4].

It takes 23 months for 60% to cancel their membership. But this is no indication that they are not joining another gym, relocating to a new area, or starting a new job with a new membership scheme."
The truth is hidden, but out there.

Note that the "Myth" speaks of "attendance" and the "Fact" speaks of "joining and quitting."

The fact is that people join and do not engage/participate and when they do, they do it wrong since the fitness and weight loss advice out there is untruthful.

Want to succeed?

Go here.

Then participate properly.

Research Finds Children Are Bending The Rules To Avoid Healthy School Food And That They Are 'drowning' In Fast Food Outlets

Who could have seen this coming?

FitnessWatch readers. That's who.
"A study from experts at City University London has found that children in Tower Hamlets are regularly ignoring school healthy eating initiatives to binge on fast food on the way to and from school - some even choose to skip lunch to eat fast food at the end of the day. The research also examined the prevalence of fast food outlets in the borough and found that 97% of households lie within a ten-minute walk from a convenience food seller and that in some areas there are more fast food outlets than shops."
Which is why, for years, we have advocated for Gram Shop Acts, "student-sized" meals, etc.

Help the kids.

Egg Consumption And Type 2 Diabetes

The egg of death.
"An egg a day raises risk of Type 2 diabetes. Research published recently in the US claims that eating one egg every day can substantially raise the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Scientists from Boston, Massachusetts reached the conclusions after tracking almost 57,000 men and women over a period of up to 20 years.

They found that eating an egg every day increased the overall risk of Type 2 diabetes by about 60 per cent. For women the risk increased by 77 per cent."
Or not.

"The American Heart Association says that one egg a day is acceptable..."

Still think they have any idea of what a "healthy" food is?

There are no "healthy" foods. There is only eating healthily.

Smoking's effect on child weight may vary by race

Another nail in the coffin of people who think there will be a genetic "cure" to their overfatness.
"Studies have linked prenatal smoking to a higher risk of childhood obesity, but new findings suggest that effect may vary based on race and ethnicity.

In a study of more than 155,000 preschool children, U.S. researchers found that the link between mothers' smoking during pregnancy and their children's risk of obesity was most clear among white families.

In contrast, only heavy prenatal smoking was tied to childhood obesity among African Americans. And there was no clear evidence that it raised the odds of obesity among children of Hispanic, Native American or Asian descent." You can bet that there will be more and more studies showing genetic differences among people that purportedly are associated with overweight/obesity."
This will lead to many more millions wasted on fruitless research trying to customize "care."

However, no matter your race, genetics or whatever people blame for their caloric irresponsibility, there is one "cure" that works for all, i.e., fewer Calories in than out.

And you have a choice.

Waste all of your hard-earned income contributing your tax dollars to this crap or step up and fight.

You decide.

If you choose to fight, here are two suggestions:
1. Contact FTC about the bad diet advice spewed by the experts.

2. contact your local child and family welfare services whenever you become aware of a story regarding fat children, i.e., nutritionally abused children, in which a physician, teacher, nurse or school principal is mentioned. Call to ask if the person reported the abuse to the agency. If not, complain since they are mandated by law to report it. They are lawbreakers for shirking their responsibilities. This makes them complicit in child abuse.

Obesity Comes With A Price Tag

And the news here is? (see below)

This is not it:
"There are hard dollars-and-cents costs to being overweight or obese, according to Humana (NYSE: HUM), one of the nation's largest health benefits companies.

Specifically, Humana estimates these costs at the following for 2009:

- $19.39 in added health care costs for every overweight pound;
- $1,037.64 for every overweight individual;
- $127 billion added to the national health care bill.

Overweight people are more prone to heart disease, stroke, diabetes - even some kinds of cancers. Chronic diseases that are a result of weighing too much are an ever-increasing part of America's health care bill."
Time for the rest of us to stop paying for it.

And this is not even the one-hundredth of it.

The personal costs have been ignored. To get a sense of what those are, go here.

This is news:
"The good news is that Humana's data also indicates that just a small change - a reduction of 276 calories a day for the overweight - makes a big difference. Cutting that little from each day's intake would start moving millions of Americans from the category of overweight to healthy. That means people don't have to re-engineer their lives to get on a healthier path. Incremental change - giving up one soft drink and walking an extra 2,500 steps each day, for example - will do the job."
FitnessMed, Inc., programs have, for years, made weight loss achievable through sensible reductions in caloric intake, not concentration camp-reductions as advocated by the experts.

Further, we have always said that "lifestyle changes" are unnecessary.

That the more mainstream in sick care is closing the huge gap between us and them is news.

But it is not enough.

To do weight loss and fitness right, go here.

New Data On Children's Height And Weight Published, UK

Really, new data on child abuse in the UK.
"Nearly one million school children were weighed and measured during 2007/08 as part of the National Child Measurement Programme, Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo announced today.

This exceeds the national goal of 85 per cent participation with 88 per cent of children in Reception and Year Six being weighed.

The 2007/08 report published by the NHS Information Centre today, shows that in Reception (4-5 year olds), almost one in four of the children measured were either overweight or obese. In Year 6 (10-11 year olds), this rate was nearly one in three.

The statistics show there has been no significant change in the prevalence of overweight and obese children in both Reception and Year 6. However, it is too early to predict that the rates of obesity and being overweight among children have stabilised. The information that is due to emerge over the next year or so will be crucial to this assessment."
Pyrrhic victory, if at all.
"Ms Primarolo said:

'Obesity is one of the biggest public health challenges we face. If we do nothing, 90 per cent of today's children could be overweight or obese by 2050, leaving them at risk from serious illnesses such as heart disease or diabetes.

'These figures show that there are still too many children who are overweight and obese - that's why we're supporting families to lead healthier lives. Change4Life will provide everyone with the information and support they need to improve their lives. The Change4Life revolution starts in January.'"
Clearly.

And just as clearly, The Change4Life revolution will almost certainly fail.

Markmonitor Warns Of The Online Availability Of Diet Pills That Can Seriously Damage Your Health

Yeah, like all of them. Note that this article is about the "real" things, not fakes.
"As the value of the UK slimming supplement market tops £55 million[1], research from MarkMonitor - the global leader in enterprise brand protection - demonstrates the extent to which prescription slimming pills and illegal diet drugs can be bought online without a prescription and the potential consequences to the lives of Britain's young women - and increasingly, men.

The risks faced by users of these medications can include palpitations, miscarriage, kidney failure, heart attack, psychotic episodes and even death which is why it was so important that this type of medication should only be taken under prescription."
They forgot to mention the risks of failure (almost guaranteed) and malpractice.

The Truth About 10 Trendy New Year's Diets

Not the truth - it is more of the bulls**t that we have come to expect from ABCNews and its IMHO whore "experts."
"Now that the Christmas cookies and New Year's Eve toasts have been replaced with resolutions and regrets, many people are scouring the Internet for ways to lose the extra pounds they packed on during the holiday season."
Among the ABCNews experts is one David Katz, an AdipOprah expert and IMHO prototype diet expert slut.

If you read the article, you will find that he is favorable to only one diet:
"Katz: "[The Flat Belly Diet] generally healthful, with an emphasis on foods noted as being good for insulin resistance. My lab actually studied the effects of this short term, and they were quite good..."
He also stated:
'There are some very silly -- and even dangerous -- ways to lose weight,' said Dr. David Katz, co-founder and director of the Yale Prevention Research Center."
As to the latter statement, true - like his and Jorge Cruise's 3-Hour Diet. (Which is not a way to lose weight, IMHO. It is a way to lose your money to these IMHO scoundrels.)

BTW, Katz claims that diets don't work, yet he authors books on dieting.

(Don't fear. Diets do work. In fact, they must work. Only the wrong ones, i.e., those recommended by the experts, don't.)

What this IMHO crook fails to mention is that Prevention Magazine is associated with this diet, i.e., the only one he considered favorably, and that he contributes "a daily blog to Prevention Magazine."

Think he does that for no reward?

Answer - no.

Think ABCNews made this conflict of interests known?

Answer - no.

Think ABCNews would be all over a story about a doc who had an interest in the company that manufactured the drugs he/she endorsed/prescribed? (As long as he/she was not an ABCNews expert, that is.)

Answer - yes.

Also, this most favored diet promises weight loss of "up to 15 pounds in 32 days!"

This is 3.28 pounds per week - far faster than is considered "safe" by Katz himself. ("...you should not be losing more than two pounds a week if you want your weight loss to be both safe and permanent." From Katz's Foreword to The 3-Hour Diet book.)

Bottom line is do not believe the MSM in the domain of fitness, at the very least.

You are dealing with a bunch of IMHO thieves whose loyalties are to their pocketbooks and not to you.

Oprah's trainer: How not to gain it all back

Well, lookie here. It is the IMHO crook and lying thief, Bob Greene, AdipOprah's trainer, telling more IMHO lies.
"Oprah's struggle with her weight has become almost mythic--it's not just that she's been so open and honest about it, but that millions of people share her story."
The Killer Queen of daytime TV has been anything but honest. (and here, in pictures)

She has been a clear and certain liar, in my opinion.

If you read the FTC complaint I filed about her and Bobbie Boy, I believe that you will also conclude that she is, at best, a lying whore for the money. At least that, too, is my opinion.

And, it is also my opinion, that Bobby is complicit in the scheme they used/use to defraud people of their money.

If you want, read this piece of s**t article where Bob invokes the technobabble of yet unproven excuses for why people fail on crappy diets like his and Oprah's.

There is no mystery here.

The IMHO crooks Bob and Oprah advocate starvation dieting and no one can sustain that. (and see here, here and here)

Diets only succeed when people can sustain fewer Calories in than out long enough to shed the desired number of pounds.

(Whether some people offered a reasonable diet will fail remains to be seen. At least fat people should be given a chance to succeed.)

But, Bob and AdipOprah press on with their IMHO nutritional homicide (as do her other boys, IMHO), trying to execute a gullible public whose trust they have betrayed:
"So here's the good news: Instead of thinking, 'I've failed over and over again, why bother trying again?' take your relapse in stride and stay positive no matter how many attempts it takes you. Each new effort brings you closer to the one that might really work. The key is to stick with it until you achieve your weight and health goals--that's my definition of a true success story."
Let's hope for better news.

Like FTC intervention to shut these folks down.

And a good old class action lawsuit aimed at AdipOprah and her boys Bob, David Katz, Jorge Cruise, Michael and Mehmet (and see here and here) and their publishers/enablers/promoters/co-conspirators in all media forms.

And while FTC is at it, maybe it should cut the power to CNN, too, the morons that printed this drivel of a non-story which they took from AdipOprah's mag.

Drug Maker Said to Pay Ghostwriters for Journal Articles

Ever wonder about the reported good results from diet drugs and fat person surgeries?
"Wyeth, the pharmaceutical company, paid ghostwriters to produce medical journal articles favorable to its female hormone replacement therapy Prempro, according to Congressional letters seeking more information about the company’s involvement in medical ghostwriting. At least one article was published even after a federal study found the drug raised the risk of breast cancer...

Mr. Grassley’s staff on the Senate Finance Committee released dozens of pages of internal corporate documents gathered from lawsuits showing the central, previously undisclosed role of Wyeth and DesignWrite in creating articles promoting hormone therapy for menopausal women as far back as 1997.

One article was published as an “Editors’ Choice” feature in May 2003 in The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, more than a year after a big federal study called the Women’s Health Initiative linked Wyeth’s Prempro, a combination of estrogen and progestin, to breast cancer. The May 2003 article said there was “no definitive evidence” that progestins cause breast cancer and added that hormone users had a better chance of surviving cancer.

At the peak of hormone therapy, in 2001, more than 126 million prescriptions for such drugs were written for women in the United States. Sales that year, primarily by Wyeth, were $3 billion. But after the federal finding, sales of the hormone drugs plummeted."
Perhaps it is time to wonder no more.

NHS Needs New Approach To Tackle Nation's Unhealthy Lifestyles - The King's Fund, Uk

Good news and bad news.
"The NHS will fail to tackle the rising tide of obesity and tobacco related illnesses unless it adopts more sophisticated techniques including those employed by commercial advertisers to help people to live healthier lifestyles.

That is one of the conclusions of a year-long investigation into the effectiveness of different types of public health programmes to tackle smoking, alcohol misuse, poor diet and lack of exercise published today by The King's Fund.

The report finds that these behaviours are deep-rooted social habits that are not easily changed by one-off, short-lived measures. The report also adds that many NHS staff lack the necessary skills and incentives to effectively help people choose and maintain healthier lifestyles."
Good news:
A recognition that current methods are wrong.

Bad news:
No recognition that current "information" is wrong.

Bad info delivered well will never work.

Heart drug linked to breast cancer

Still think they have any idea of what a "safe" drug is, let alone one to "cure" your overfatness?
Use of the heart drug digoxin appears to increase the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women, according to the results of a study published in Breast Cancer Research.

Digoxin helps the heart pump stronger and is used to treat heart failure. The drug's name comes from the plant from which it is derived, Foxglove or Digitalis purpurea...

...digoxin use increases the odds of breast cancer by 30 percent or more depending on the duration of use."

Digitalis, from which digoxin is derived, has only been used clincally since the 18th century.

Oops.

Like the Oops you can expect to hear from the malpractices known as bariatric surgery and diet drugs.

World (sic) First Study To Investigate Novel Ways For Obese Men To Lose Weight

Morons from down under.
"The world's first study to investigate the causative link between testosterone, obesity and sleep apnea is being run by the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Sydney...

'Obesity and sleep apnea are reaching epidemic proportions in men worldwide. Simple, safe and effective methods are urgently needed for men to lose weight, particularly because current simple methods may be more suited to women.'"
How about having them eat fewer Calories than they burn?

Idiots.

First Study To Look At Impact Of Body Mass Index On Older Kids Involved In Car Crashes

Kudos, fatsos. You have discovered yet another way to abuse your children.
"Children who are overweight or obese are over two and a half times more likely to suffer injuries to their upper and lower extremities following a motor vehicle crash compared with normal weight children, according to a new report from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Center for Injury Research and Policy...

'Our findings document yet another risk associated with overweight and obesity in children,' said study lead author Keshia M. Pollack, MPH, PhD, an assistant professor with the Bloomberg School's Center for Injury Research and Policy."
Stop nutritional child abuse and punish child-abusing parents and the docs and teachers complicit in the abuse.

Honey Adds Health Benefits, Is Natural Preservative And Sweetener In Salad Dressings

Salads dressed to kill.
"Antioxidant-rich honey is a healthy alternative to chemical additives and refined sweeteners in commercial salad dressings, said a new University of Illinois study.

'To capitalize on the positive health effects of honey, we experimented with using honey in salad dressings," said Nicki Engeseth, a U of I associate professor of food chemistry. "We found that the antioxidants in honey protected the quality of the salad dressings for up to nine months while sweetening them naturally.'"
The assumption that "antioxidant-rich honey is a healthy alternative" is unsettled at this point.

Face it, they have no idea of what an "healthy" food is.

If you want "health," then eat healthily.

That is the best you can do given current knowledge.

Vitamin E may up pneumonia risk in some smokers

More antioxidant miracles.
"Taking vitamin E supplements may increase the risk of pneumonia in some middle-age men who smoke, a new study suggests.

The findings, say researchers, add to evidence that people should be cautious about taking vitamin E in a bid to ward off chronic disease.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant...

A number of clinical trials, however, have found no evidence that vitamin E protects against ills like heart disease, stroke or cancer...

Overall, the study found that vitamin E appeared to raise the risk of pneumonia in smokers who were either thin (less than 132 pounds) or heavy (more than 220 pounds). But this was only true when the men also were taking high levels of vitamin C, compared with other men of the same weight.

In the lighter-weight group, vitamin E raised the risk of pneumonia by 61 percent, while in the heavier group, the supplement more than doubled men's pneumonia risk...

Vitamin C, also an antioxidant, is known to interact with vitamin E. 'But we cannot explain why the interaction leads to harm and not to benefit when the level of both is high,' Hemila said.

The bottom line, according to the researcher, is that no one knows which people might benefit from vitamin E supplements and which ones could be harmed."
That is true. Finally, truth.
"In general, experts recommend that adults get 15 mg -- or 22.5 international units (IU) -- of vitamin E daily, from sources such as vegetable oils, nuts and fortified cereals."
So much for the experts.

Oops.

Which Obesity Treatment Is Most Successful For Keeping The Weight Off?

Stop the presses! You mean fat person surgery is NOT necessary?
"Severely obese patients who have lost significant amounts of weight by changing their diet and exercise habits may be as successful in keeping the weight off long-term as those individuals who lost weight after bariatric surgery, according to a new study published online by the International Journal of Obesity.

While weight loss and maintenance were comparable between the two treatments, patients who relied on non-surgical methods had to work harder over a longer duration to maintain their weight losses, say researchers from The Miriam Hospital's Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine.

'Our findings suggest that its possible to maintain large weight losses through intensive behavioral efforts, such as changing your approach to eating and exercise, regardless of whether you lost weight with bariatric surgery or through non-surgical methods,' says lead author Dale Bond, PhD, of The Miriam Hospital's Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine. 'Behavioral modifications and lifestyle changes are critical components to long-term weight loss maintenance.'
And that all it takes to lose and keep off the weight is some caloric responsibility/self-control?

Be still my heart.
Researchers matched each surgical patient with two non-surgical patients through the National Weight Control Registry. All participants - 315 total - lost an average of 124 lbs and had maintained their weight loss for an average of 5.5 years at the beginning of this two-year study.

Individuals were surveyed at both the start of the study and at the one-year follow-up about weight-maintenance behaviors (including food records and physical activity levels) and various psychological factors (such as dietary restraint, feelings of hunger and food cravings, stress and depression). Weight-related information was collected at both the one- and two-year follow-up.

There were no significant differences in the caloric intake or the amount of weight regain between the surgical and non-surgical groups; both regained an average of about four lbs. each year. However, researchers identified behavioral differences between the two groups, with bariatric patients reporting greater fat and fast food consumption, less conscious control over their eating and higher incidences of depression and more stress than non-surgical patients.

Similar differences were observed with physical activity behaviors. Only one-third of the surgical group reported engaging in a level of physical activity consistent with recommendations for preventing weight regain compared with 60 percent of the non-surgical group."
Guess there is just no escaping the Calories in, Calories out thing.

Go figger.

Vitamins 'do not cut cancer risk'

Say it ain't so.
"Taking vitamin C or E does not reduce the risk of prostate cancers - or other forms of the disease, two large US studies suggest.

Both trials were set up following some evidence that taking supplements might have a positive effect.

But one study of 35,533 men, and a second of 15,000 doctors, found no evidence that cancer rates were any lower in those taking supplements...

In the first study, researchers from University of Texas and the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine gave healthy men either the trace mineral selenium, vitamin E, both or a dummy pill.

The team intended to monitor all the participants for at least seven years but the trial was stopped early because the results were so disappointing...

In the second study, researchers at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital tested the impact of regular vitamin E and C supplements on cancer rates among 14, 641 male doctors.

Over eight years, taking vitamin E had no impact at all on rates of either prostate cancer, or cancer in general. Vitamin C had no significant effect."
How can it be that cancer cannot be stopped/cured with an over-the-counter pill?
"Dr Jodie Moffat, of the charity Cancer Research UK, said: 'There are a lot of studies looking at whether vitamin and mineral supplements can reduce the risk of cancer but many of them, like this one, don't support a link.

'This new research means it is even less likely than we previously thought that supplements can protect against prostate cancer.

'Supplements don't substitute for a healthy diet and some studies have shown that they may actually increase the risk of cancer.'"
Yup.

Usual Metabolic Process Goes Awry In Recently Discovered Mutation, Burning Lipids Instead Of Storing Them

Apropos.
"A previously unknown mutation discovered in a common roundworm holds the promise of new treatments for obesity in humans, McGill University researchers say."
They're using the roundworm as the model for a roundperson.

Nature and Nurture Contribute to Overeating

Do you really want to trust alleged "info" on craving from the people who crave this:

Which is defined as this:
haggis

• noun (pl. same) a Scottish dish consisting of seasoned sheep’s or calf’s offal mixed with suet and oatmeal, boiled in a bag traditionally made from the animal’s stomach.
And is made like this?
"The likelihood of craving a couple of calorie-laden burgers and a cupcake or two instead of consuming a simple rice cake may be determined by a genetic mutation associated with obesity, found investigators here.

The effect of the mutation in a subset of children appears to involve control of both the amount of food consumed and the desire to consume dense, high calorie foods, researchers reported in the Dec. 11 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Children who carried a variant of rs9939609, a fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene, consumed more food at test meals than controls (P=0.006) and were also more likely to choose a burger over a rice cake, according to Colin N.A. Palmer, Ph.D., of the University of Dundee's Biomedical Research Institute at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, and colleagues."
Two things are for sure:

1. Genetics is irrelevant. No matter what your genetics, you will never be able to lose weight unless you consume fewer Calories than you burn and you will never be able to gain weight unless you consume more Calories than you burn.

2. Once they have to invoke the A allele "variant of rs9939609" in order to conclude "the key to preventing obesity in people with this genotype, which occurred in 0.385% of the population studied, would be 'moderate and controlled restriction of energy intake,'" i.e., fewer Calories in than out, and which "accounts for only a small proportion of differences in BMI in the entire population," you'd have to be a complete idiot, like these researchers, to buy into this crap as a "cure" for overfatness.

Diabetes drugs double women's fracture risk

Still think they know what a "safe" drug is for treating the consequences of your caloric irresponsibility?
"Long-term use of GlaxoSmithKline's Avandia and Takeda's Actos doubles the risk of bone fractures in women with type 2 diabetes, according to a study released on Wednesday.

Scientists already knew the two thiazolidinedione (TZD) drugs for diabetes were associated with fractures, but the magnitude of the risk had not been evaluated.

'This study shows that these agents double the risk of fractures in women with type 2 diabetes, who are already at higher risk before taking the therapy,' said Sonal Singh of North Carolina's Wake Forest University School of Medicine."
Type 2 diabetes is fat person diabetes.

Kudos, fatsos.

Obesity may raise headache risk

Clearly.
"Being overweight or obese may increase the likelihood of having severe headaches and migraines, new study findings suggest...

In analyses of 7,601 adult men and women, Dr. Earl S. Ford and colleagues at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, report that being overweight or obese increased the likelihood of headache by 1.2- to nearly 1.4-times."
And it certainly gives the rest of us headaches, too...

From raising our sick care costs, from the nutritional child abuse heaped on kids by fat people, etc.

ECGs Not Much Better Predictor than Clinical Assessment

Still think they have any idea of what they are doing? EKGs have been around forever, billions have likely been spent on them and now they are telling us that their usefulness is questionable.
"A thorough clinical assessment of suspected angina provided nearly as much prognostic information as resting and exercise ECGs, a British cohort study found.

There were only small, non-significant, differences in composite death from coronary heart disease or non-fatal acute coronary syndrome between groups of patients who had clinical assessment only and those who also had either a resting or exercise ECG, said Adam D. Timmis, M.D., of Barts and the London Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Furthermore, almost half (47%) of all coronary events that occurred during the approximately two-and-a half-year follow-up occurred in patients who'd had a negative exercise ECG that did not indicate any heart problems, Dr. Timmis and colleagues reported online in BMJ."
Let me be clear.

There is no beef with EKGs, in particular, here at Fitness Watch. Maybe they are great, maybe they are not. The data remains conflicting for now. And that is the point.

For reliability, there are only principles upon which we rely.

One principle is that "Truth has a shelf life."

Clearly this is absolutely true in the domains of fitness and health.

It must be this way since newer "knowledge" changes how we relate to and value older "knowledge."

Specifically, as regards fitness, I submit that there is no real new "knowledge" being offered, that all one needs to know to succeed is out there and that what we are fed by the powers that be is deception, not knowledge.

Success, in any undertaking, is most likely if one relies on immutable laws, not moving targets.

For example, it is simply not possible to end up poorer in a given sequence of transactions if one bought low, then sold high.

If you want to lose weight, if you want to get fitter, if you want to be able to participate more fully in life, then follow the principles that cannot fail you.

Following Big Sick Care, Big Pharma, Big Oprah and her experts, etc., will fail you (and do fail you) with certainty.

The New Year is nigh.

Give yourself a real chance to make this next year your best year and distance yourself from your executioners, IMHO.

First Childhood Obesity Symposium

Stupid, friggin', s**theads alert!

Really. How moronic is this? Really.
"The Obesity Institute at Children's National Medical Center recently gathered experts from many disciplines to share ideas, failures and successes, and the future promise of prevention and intervention strategies to fight childhood obesity, both in the District of Columbia and nationwide.

Through the Obesity Institute, Children's National seeks to reduce childhood obesity using a multidisciplinary approach that draws upon our experts from throughout Children's National, as well as research, clinical, policy, and advocacy partners region. (sic)"
First, why are we losing if these folks are experts and have "successes" to share?
"'There is no single cause for the increase in childhood obesity, but certainly high fat diets and lack of exercise are contributing factors,' said Denice Cora-Bramble, MD, MBA, executive director of the Goldberg Center for Community Pediatric Health at Children's National. 'Likewise, there is no single answer to systematically solving the problem. But the upward trend, especially here in the District, demands that we develop effective interventions faster.'"
That's why.

These imbeciles cannot figure out/admit that there is one and only one cause to any obesity - more Calories in than out.
"Children's Obesity Institute tackles these issues from all angles. The Institute's multidisciplinary approach allows for a better understanding of the causes and barriers around this disorder, analyzing them from the laboratories that study the genetics to the community interventions impacting family lifestyles."
Then they, apparently proudly, go looking everywhere but where they should to find the "answer." Like this old joke:
A drunk was crawling about on the sidewalk under a lamppost at night.

A Police Officer came up to him and inquired, "What are you doing?"

The drunk replied, "I'm looking for my car keys."

The Officer looked around in the lamplight, then asked the drunk, "I don't see any car keys. Are you sure you lost them here?"

The drunk replied, "No, I lost them over there", and pointed to an area of the sidewalk deep in shadow.

The policeman then asked, "Well, if you lost them over there, why are you looking over here?"

The drunk looked at him and said, "Because the light is better over here." (from here)
And who commits this imbecility?
"'This is the first of many such meetings that will bring together our best and brightest investigators on this issue,' said Joseph Wright, MD, executive director of the Child Health Advocacy Institute at Children's National. 'These collaborations allow our teams to develop effective strategies locally through multidisciplinary studies. Then, as a national research and education leader, we can help similar communities replicate our successes.'"
Pray to whatever spirit, force, entity, etc., that moves you and ask him/her/it to save us from these self-proclaimed "best and brightest."

Selenium May Prevent High Risk-Bladder Cancer

Wanna bet?
"A study published in the December issue of Cancer Prevention Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, suggests that selenium, a trace mineral found in grains, nuts and meats, may aid in the prevention of high-risk bladder cancer.

Researchers from Dartmouth Medical School compared selenium levels in 767 individuals newly diagnosed with bladder cancer to the levels of 1,108 individuals from the general population. Findings showed an inverse association between selenium and bladder cancer among women, some smokers and those with p53 positive bladder cancer."
And the price of uncertain "prevention"?

No benefits for prostate cancer and a possible increase in the likelihood for developing diabetes.

So far, selenium and stupidium are one and the same.

Dr. Leavitt's Scary Diagnosis

Kudos, fatsos.
"Health care, says the man most concerned with that 17 percent of America's economy, can be 'a nation-ruining issue.' As Michael Leavitt ends four years as secretary of health and human services, he offers this attention-arresting arithmetic: Absent fundamental reforms, over the next two decades, the average American household's health-care spending, including the portion of its taxes that pays for Medicare and Medicaid, will go from 23 percent to 41 percent of average household income.

It is, Leavitt says, 'predictable' that today's traumatizing economic turbulence, by heightening Americans' insecurity, will complicate reforming entitlements. This, too, is predictable: By curtailing revenue, today's recession will bring closer the projected exhaustion of the Medicare Part A trust fund, from early 2019 to perhaps 2016. That should get the president-elect's attention."
"Should." But won't, I'll wager.

And even if it did, doing the right thing re: sick care "entitlements" is simply not politically correct.

And who has gotten us into another fine mess, Ollie?
"In the 43 years since America decided that health care for the elderly would be paid for by people still working, the ratio of workers to seniors has steadily declined. And the number of seniors living long enough to have five or more chronic conditions -- 23 percent of Medicare beneficiaries -- has increased. Many of those conditions could be prevented or managed by better decisions about eating, exercising and smoking."
Fatsos.

(Though, in all fairness, Big Sick Care and its co-conspirators, including Big Government, are complicit in keeping people fat.)

If you are fit, better protect yourself and oppose efforts to make sick care more available to the calorically irresponsible.

This is an existential war.

And unless you act, you and your children will lose.

Liver Fat More Important Than Apple Or Pear Shape In Heart Woes

Still think they have any idea what they are looking for/at?
"For years, pear-shaped people who carry weight in the thighs and backside have been told they are at lower risk for high blood pressure and heart disease than apple-shaped people who carry fat in the abdomen. But new findings from nutrition researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis suggest body-shape comparisons don't completely explain risk.

In two studies, they report excess liver fat appears to be the real key to insulin resistance, cholesterol abnormalities and other problems that contribute to diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Having too much fat stored in the liver is known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease."
And who gets this?
"'Since obesity is so much more common now, both in adults and in children, we are seeing a corresponding increase in the incidence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease,' says senior investigator Samuel Klein, M.D., the Danforth Professor of Medicine and Nutritional Science. 'That can lead to serious liver disorders such as cirrhosis in extreme cases, but more often it tends to have metabolic consequences.'"
Fatsos.

And who pays for it?

Look in the mirror.

Who else?
"The researchers determined that children with fatty liver disease also had abnormalities in glucose and fat metabolism, including lower levels of HDL cholesterol, the so-called good cholesterol. Those without a fatty liver did not have markers of metabolic problems. Whether shaped like pears or apples, it was fat in the liver that influenced metabolic risk."
The nutritionally abused children of fat people.

And who benefits?
"'Abdominal fat is not the best marker for risk,' says Klein, who also directs the Nutrition Support Service at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. 'It appears liver fat is the real marker. Abdominal fat probably has been cited in the past because it tends to track so closely with liver fat. But if you look at people where the two don't correspond - with excess fat in the liver but not in the abdomen and vice versa - the only thing that consistently predicts metabolic derangements is fat in the liver.'"
The IMHO nutritional homicide maniacs, such as AdipOprah and her experts. (See here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here.)

Stop the madness.

Communicating Medical News — Pitfalls of Health Care Journalism

Starting off the new year with the pot calling the kettle black.
"Whether they realize it or not, journalists reporting on health care developments deliver public health messages that can influence the behavior of clinicians and patients. Often these messages are delivered effectively by seasoned reporters who perform thoughtfully even in the face of breaking news and tight deadlines. But all too frequently, what is conveyed about health by many other journalists is wrong or misleading."
This tripe is from The New England Journal of Medicine, IMHO, one of your executioners. It's author is Susan Dentzer of PBS.

Though she describes a real issue, crappy sick care reporting, what she does not do is describe the very real issue of crappy sick care research and crappy sick care messages that are the subjects of crappy sick care reporting.
"More broadly, a problem that is worsening in this era of the 24/7 news cycle is the frequent failure to put new developments into any kind of reasonable context for readers or viewers."
This is clearly the case in Big Sick Care's failure to put weight loss and exercise recommendations "into any kind of reasonable context for readers or viewers" or patients.

Though Dentzer adopts an "I holier than thou" attitude vis-a-vis her colleagues, she is, at least based on this piece, nothing more than a "useful idiot" to Big Sick Care and the MSM.

Know with certainty, that when it comes to your "health," the MSM and Big Sick Care are your enemies.

Despite covering themselves in sheep's clothing.

Weight loss easier when you get paid for it

Here is an article that puts the lie to every weight loss approach other than Calories in, Calories out.
"Losing weight is easier when there is money on the line, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

They said weight-loss programs that reward people with money -- and remind them of the cash they stand to lose if they fail -- provided a powerful incentive to lose weight compared with more conventional approaches."
If you believed the conventional crap, that overweight/obesity is caused by genetics, culture, hormones, infectious agents, ethnicity, "unhealthy" foods, you are clearly an idiot.
"He said many weight-loss programs fail because people are being asked to make sacrifices now for rewards in the future."
What a terrible concept.

Having to choose between satisfying the now or planning for the future. The unfairness of this is overwhelming.

So, in a grand gesture of concession, I will posit in your support that possibly fat people, their genes, the genes of the dreaded overweight/obesity-causing viruses and bacteria which work their way into the human-porcine genome, the genetics of certain cultures/ethnicities contain the "Fat Pig, Filthy Prostitute, Stinking Liar" gene.

The FP2SL gene prevents fatsos from consuming fewer Calories than they burn unless they are paid to do it and causes them to lie about it, complaining that they cannot lose weight "no matter what they do."

It is an insurmountable problem as it is in the genes.

Once the FP2SL gene ceases being paid to remain "dormant" it will rear its ugly belly and make itself manifest once again.
"Volpp said the studies were highly effective at producing short-term weight loss, but when the money stopped flowing, the weight began to creep back on."
Thus, there is a choice.

We can spend billions trying to eradicate the FP2SL gene from the pool or we can let fat people extinct themselves.

I vote for the latter.

Canadian carriers cram to obey obesity ruling

The Canucks are starting off the new year insanely stupid.
"You’ve dawdled this whole year. Now stop all that bellyaching and get on with it.'

That, in essence, is the message Canada’s Supreme Court gave the country’s major airlines late last month. Now, after spending a year trying to weasel out of it with repeated court appeals, Canadian airlines are scrambling to figure out how to meet the January 10th deadline for complying with “one-person, one-fare” policy mandated by the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA). It is groundbreaking legislation some hope — and others fear — may spread to the United States and beyond."
"Groundbreaking" as in that's what happens when overloaded aircraft plummet earthward.

Now why would the aircraft get overloaded by following a “one-person, one-fare” policy?
"Under the new rules, applying only to domestic flights, Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz and WestJet cannot charge more than one fare to persons with disabilities who cannot fly without the help of an attendant.

Few people will take issue with that.

What some folks are taking issue with, however, is the part of the ruling that also promises a complimentary second seat to passengers who are 'determined to be functionally disabled by obesity.'"
It is not really one-person, one-fare.

It is one-being, one-fare. So elephants pay the same as cheetahs.

How unique are the Canadians in their foolishness?
"'No other country in the world has told airlines to do this,' WestJet spokesman Robert Palmer said. 'We’re in uncharted territory here. We know how to run an airline. But we’re not experts on at what point obesity becomes a disability.'

Yet, come January 10th, Canadian airlines will be expected to have it figured out.

They’ll have to hurry."
Indeed.

U.S. Health Stagnates For Fourth Year In A Row As Revealed In 2008 America's Health Rankings™

Kudos, fatsos.
"In a disturbing development, the 2008 America's Health Rankings™: A Call to Action for Individuals & Their Communities revealed that the health of Americans has failed to improve for the fourth consecutive year. Key factors contributing to these results included unprecedented levels of obesity...

The prevalence of obesity has more than doubled in the last 19 years. An alarming one in four Americans is currently considered obese putting them at increased risk for health issues such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and cancer (endometrial, breast, colon, and gallbladder)."
How can this be?
"'These statistics indicate that what we are doing as a nation is not working,' said Georges C. Benjamin, M.D., executive director of American Public Health Association."
Duh - as in see here and here to find out about why their spew "is not working."
"America's Health Rankings™ is the result of a collaborative partnership between United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Association, and Partnership for Prevention. Visit http://www.americashealthrankings.org to view an interactive U.S. map that presents, at a glance, key national findings for 2008, plus a quick snapshot of this year's state rankings."
And these organizations, folks, are among those killing you and your kids, IMHO, as they are the disseminators of bad health advice.

If you are a chicken, do not listen to the fox re: matters of your own well-being.

Good, Bad And Ugly In Food Marketing Focus Of $6.4 Million Childhood Obesity Grant To Rudd Center At Yale

More Robert Wood Johnson Foundation waste.
"The link between food marketing and the growing childhood obesity epidemic is the focus of a $6.4 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University.

Principal investigators, Rudd Center Director Kelly D. Brownell and Deputy Director Marlene Schwartz, will use the grant to develop a three-year program to identify opportunities to improve the health of children and adolescents in the United States by reducing the harm associated with food marketing to youth."
First.

Kelly Brownell is, IMHO, clearly the wrong person to be involved and an IMHO con in the weight loss game.

Second.

You want "to identify opportunities to improve the health of children and adolescents in the United States"?

Don't look to the marketers.

Kids do not have the discretionary income to buy the products.

Look to the child-abusing parents and those complicit in child abuse - doctors, nurses, teachers, principals, etc.

That will make a difference.

Intelligent 'have better sperm'

Why overweight/obesity researchers, diet gurus and fitness experts have bad sperm.
"Men of higher intelligence tend to produce better quality sperm, UK research suggests."
BTW, fat men also have bad sperm.

The members of these groups are clearly of low intelligence.

Too bad their sperm isn't so bad that reproduction is impossible.

Bummer.

Overweight kids may have more anxiety, depression

Now what about being a fat human-like piglet could lead a kid to anxiety and depression?
"Compared with their thinner peers, overweight children may be more prone to developing depression and anxiety symptoms by the time they reach middle school, a new study suggests.

The study, which followed more than 1,200 U.S. children from age 2 to sixth grade, found those that those who were overweight tended to have more "internalizing" problems as they moved through elementary school -- being somewhat more prone to becoming withdrawn, anxious or depressed.

They were not, however, at higher risk of conduct problems, like acting out at school."
Maybe because they were too fat to move and act out.
"He said that parents should be 'watchful' for signs that their child is having problems -- such as changes in sleep habits, withdrawal from their normal activities or unusual irritability -- but should not become 'overly anxious.'...

Starting in third grade, the researchers found, there was a clear relationship between children's weight and subsequent internalizing symptoms.

The bottom line, according to Bradley, is parents, teachers and health providers should be aware of the signs that children are having such problems, and be ready to help them deal with any negative feelings connected to their weight."
Now that is a joke.

This nutcase researcher is expecting parents who are not "watchful" enough to notice "signs that their child is having problems" like getting way too fat, to care enough to be "watchful for signs that their child is having problems" like "withdrawal from their normal activities."

Such as what? They start eating less?

These child-abusing parents weren't there to help their kids deal with gaining the weight, except as facilitators.

And as to the teachers...these people are complicit in the child abuse to begin with. Expecting them to step up and help is simply ignorant.

More completely moronic happenings in the world of fat kid research.

Make efforts like these part of your New Year's resolution.

Resolve to help the kids.

Many Americans miss exercise goals

They may not fulfill them, but they sure as heck do not "miss" them.
"Many Americans are failing to meet the minimum recommendations for exercise, although confusing guidelines are making it difficult to assess, researchers reported on Thursday.

Depending on which federal exercise recommendations are used, either about half or about two-thirds of Americans meet minimum goals, the team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found."
Well, finally some acknowledgment that there may be something wrong with the guidelines.

There is.

In fact, there are lots of things wrong with the guidelines.

What is interesting here is that the majority or almost a majority of Americans claim that they are following them.
"Under guidelines released by the U.S. Health and Human Services Department in October, the minimum recommended aerobic physical activity is 150 minutes -- two and a half hours -- a week of moderate activity such as brisk walking, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous activity such as running.

Just under 65 percent of adults reached that goal, the CDC said.

The government's Healthy People 2010 objectives call for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week, or 20 minutes of vigorous activity three days per week. Only 49 percent of those surveyed met these goals."
What is really wrong is that this large number of people think they are actually following the guidelines.

Personally, I don't believe them.

But, if true, then the guidelines must be faulty since so many people remain fat.
"'Existing scientific evidence cannot determine whether the health benefits of 30 minutes of activity, 5 days per week, are any different from the benefits of 50 minutes, 3 days per week,' the report reads...
About a third of Americans are obese and another one-third are overweight, the CDC says, and they are at higher than acceptable risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer."
That is true.

There are no comparable data available to determine what level of physical fitness places a person at a lower risk of developing certain bad illnesses as BMI does for body weight.

If you want to get fit, physically and nutritionally, go here and give yourself a fighting chance.

Thyroid Function And Structure May Be Altered In Pediatric Obesity

Nutritional child abuse at the glandular level.
"In addition to its strong associations with hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, pediatric obesity may induce alterations in thyroid function and structure, according to a new study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).

Thyroid hormones drive metabolism, however demonstration of a direct or strong correlation of obesity with deficient thyroid function has been controversial, and previous studies provide conflicting conclusions. While some studies have found that thyroid disorders may lead to obesity, this recent study shows that in some cases, it is the obesity that may cause the disorder.

'Our study shows that alterations in thyroid function and structure are common in obese children and we may have uncovered the link,' said Giorgio Radetti, M.D., of the Regional Hospital of Bolzano in Italy and lead author of the study. 'We found an association between body mass index and thyroid hormone levels which suggests that fat excess may have a role in thyroid tissue modification.'"
For the calorically irresponsible child-abusing and unfit parents of the world, this must be welcome news.

First, it gives them another way to accomplish their goals of abusing their children without culpability.

Second, it gives them another way to extract money from the rest of us to "rescue" their children so they can appear less irresponsible and have their abusive activities underwritten by others since, with certainty, payment for treatment will come from the public coffers. (Ain't "health care" reform great?}

Kudos, fatsos.

You have elevated personal irresponsibility and child abuse to gold standards and national policy.

And if you, dear reader, are sick and tired of nutritional child abuse and paying for this crap, making your feelings known should be among your New Year's resolutions.

Make 2009 the year to end nutritional child abuse.

Young Doctors Exercise Less Than National Average

From the "Do as I say, not as I do Department." These are your leaders, folks.
"In comparison to the national average, young doctors get much less exercise, and this level of exercise is below recommended levels, according to a study released on December 2, 2008 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, one of the BMJ Specialist Journals.

Regular exercise is universally recognized as a prevention measure for a number of health problems, and the UK Department of Health recommends that every adult perform 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five times a week. It has been shown previously that, in men who exercise regularly, death from all causes is almost halved...

However, only 21% achieved recommended exercise levels, far below the national average of 44%. Additionally, examining the doctors performing too little exercise, most worked at the hospital with a gymnasium -- but one third of the doctors working there said they were unaware of its existence.

In the 35 doctors who used a gym, on-site or elsewhere, only three exercised according to the guidelines."
Another reason not to listen to docs re: nutritional and physical fitness, they have no experience and cannot relate to what they are demanding of us.

Calcium And Vitamin D May Not Be The Only Protection Against Bone Loss

Whole grains and protein may break your bones, and words can really hurt you.
"Diets that are high in protein and cereal grains produce an excess of acid in the body which may increase calcium excretion and weaken bones, according to a new study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM)."
Still think they have any idea of what a "healthy" food is?

And they will likely never know, at least during our lifetimes.
"'Heredity, diet, and other lifestyle factors contribute to the problem of bone loss and fractures,' said Bess Dawson-Hughes, M.D., of Tufts University in Boston, Mass. and lead author of the study. 'When it comes to dietary concerns regarding bone health, calcium and vitamin D have received the most attention, but there is increasing evidence that the acid/base balance of the diet is also important.'"
It is just too complex.

Look at what is involved: "Heredity, diet, and other lifestyle factors..."

Question - How many other "lifestyle factors" do you think there are?

Answer - Too numerous to count. To track. To consider. To know. And they will change over a person's lifetime.

Whatever.

The point?

This stuff is all words describing a moving target that is faster than the brains of the experts.

Don't get outrun by following the travelers in the slow mental lane.

Simply eat healthily and the best that can be will be.

Make this your New Year's resolution.

Secreted Protein Sends Signal That Fat Is On The Way

Another foolish undertaking.
"After you eat a burger and fries or other fat-filled meal, a protein produced by the liver may send a signal that fat is on the way, suggests a report in the December issue of the journal Cell Metabolism, a Cell Press publication.

Researchers have found in mice that the liver produces a protein called adropin, which rises in response to high-fat foods and falls after fasting."
By now, unless you are brain dead, you should be alert to the fact that everyday in every way, researchers are getting better and better at discovering "new" things that "cause" or are related to overweight/obesity.

And for each new cause, they claim a potential way to a cure.
"The new results suggest that treatments designed to deliver adropin or otherwise boost its levels may hold promise in the war against obesity and associated metabolic disorders, including fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes."
And the parade of "new" discoveries continues, apparently, infinitely.

This should be proof positive that they will never find "the cure."

Still, if you are a complete moron and have some confidence in them, perhaps this new discovery will convince you, at last, that they have found a way to cause adropin your weight.

If you are not an idiot and recognize what is going on, go here so you can lose weight properly, naturally and successfully.

Institute For Food, Nutrition And Health To Be Established At Rutgers Using $10 From Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

The usually bad sense Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shows uncommon good sense.

RWJF generally funds crap with millions of misdirected dollars based on the conventional stupidity and a completely propagandized sense of right and wrong.

Clearly it is an organization with too much money and too few brain cells.

However, in this instance they had the good sense to contribute only $10 towards the establishment of another doomed to fail weight weight loss undertaking.
"Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has received a four-year, $10 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to establish the Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health, on its George H. Cook Campus.

Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick announced his intention to establish the new institute during his Annual Address to the University Community on Sept. 19. In that address, McCormick made it clear the new institute would focus on obesity and its associated diseases, and would 'ask and answer questions such as these: Why are young children developing health problems normally associated with overweight adults? How can we teach portion control and motivate healthier lifestyles? What are the best low-calorie diets to keep children lean? How can we help communities serve those who are most at risk?'"
Oh, it's "$10 million" and Rutgers own press release has a typo.

Bummer.

Too bad.

So much for the sudden attack of good sense by RWJF.

I can dream can't I?

Dietitian, Nutritionist, Food Advisor, Do You Know The Difference?

Does it make a difference?
"The Health Professions Council (HPC) and the British Dietetic Association (BDA) have launched a joint campaign to raise awareness of the role of 'dietitians' and warn consumers against seeking advice from unregulated and inappropriately qualified sources."
"Unqualified sources" = dietitians.
"As statutorily regulated and qualified health professionals, dietitians work to strict codes of conduct that prevent them from recommending inappropriate nutritional advice, herbal supplements or diagnostic tests. As independent nutrition experts they can provide advice that is current, unbiased and evidence based."
And all the evidence points to diet advice failing everywhere.
"'It is important that the public recognise and understand what dietitians do, as there are many sources offering advice about diet and health - some of which are erroneous and potentially harmful, if not devastating. Dietitians use the most up to date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease, which they translate into easy practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices, taking into account an individual's lifestyle, budget and health.'"
If you find a need to know the difference between dietitian, nutritionist and food advisor, think about the differences among crap, stool and s**t.

What? You can't find a difference?

Bingo.

That explains it all.

Child abuse more common than thought

Clearly.
"About 1 in 10 children in the developed world is abused each year but official statistics indicate less than a tenth of those abused are investigated, a series of international studies showed on Wednesday.

Child protection services are failing to recognise abuse in part because doctors, schools and community health workers underreport it, they wrote in the Lancet medical journal."
As readers of Fitness Watch have known for years.
"'Child maltreatment is common, and for many it is a chronic condition, with repeated and ongoing maltreatment merging into adverse outcomes throughout childhood and into adulthood,' Ruth Gilbert of the Institute of Child Health at University College London and Cathy Spatz Widom of City University of New York wrote.

'The burden on the children themselves and on society is substantial.'"
That is a certainty.
"Parents account for most types of maltreatment except for sexual abuse, which is usually committed by other family members or an acquaintance, researchers said."
"Maltreatment" like nutritional child abuse which, incidentally, was completely ignored in this piece.

Add nutritional child abuse to the stats and child abuse becomes much, much more common than originally thought.

But intentionally ignoring the most common form of child abuse makes sense however, since the article originated in a medical journal, Lancet.

Docs are quick to distance themselves from their legally mandated responsibilities especially when doing so makes them money.

Shameful.

Food Intake Shut Down And 'Siesta Mode' Turned On By Newly Identified Molecule

A rare admission of truth.
"Some 300 million adults worldwide are severely overweight and at risk for life-threatening illnesses such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. But obesity is difficult to treat. 'We do not have good medical therapies for obesity,' Shulman says, noting that the small number of diet drugs on the market now come with intolerable side effects and have only modest impacts on weight."
Tainted, however, with the effort to make a buck.
"Rats treated with extra NAPE for five days ate less and lost weight, hinting that studying NAPE could help researchers design better appetite suppressants or obesity drugs."
It is all about separating you from your money.

Antioxidants 'cannot slow ageing'

Scandalous lies.

No, not the article. The subject of the article.
"Diets and creams claiming their antioxidant properties could cheat ageing may be worthless, a study says...

The team from University College London said, in the Genes and Development journal, there was "no clear evidence" they could slow ageing.

Antioxidants are a staple of the beauty and health industries."
Two clearly reliable industry sources for information.
"This has been based on a 50-year-old theory.

In 1956, it was suggested that ageing was caused by a build-up of molecular damage caused by reactive forms of oxygen, called superoxides or free radicals, circulating in the body. This is known as oxidative stress.

Antioxidants supposedly worked to mop up these free radicals, minimising their damage.

This week's study, however, could explain why many studies aimed at proving the theory have been inconclusive."
Guess it just might.
"A spokesman for the Cosmetic Toiletry and Perfumery Association said cosmetic companies carry out extensive research and rigorous scientific studies to ensure claims are supported by robust evidence."
Wanna bet?
"Pamela Mason, of the Health Supplements Information Service, said: 'Antioxidant vitamins, like any other vitamins were never intended for the prevention of chronic disease and mortality. They are not magic bullets.

'They are intended for health maintenance on the basis of their various physiological roles in the body and in the case of the antioxidant vitamins, this does, in appropriate amounts, include a protective antioxidant effect in the body’s tissues.'"
The bull just keeps on coming.

In any event, this link will take you to a bunch of IMHO medical whores trying to con fools out of their money by selling false hopes.

Obese children risk thyroid damage

Kudos, fatsos.
"Obese children may be damaging their thyroids, creating a vicious cycle of metabolism and overweight, Italian researchers reported on Wednesday."
More nutritional child abuse.

Fat people make their kids fat.

Stop these fatso child abusers.

Exercise improves brain blood flow in older adults

Not bad.
"In older individuals, exercise is associated with an increase in the number of large-diameter vessels in the cerebral region of the brain and with an increase in blood flow in the three major cerebral arteries, researchers announced at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, which is being held here this week.

As the investigators noted, narrowing and loss of small vessels may contribute to cognitive decline. This area of the brain controls functions that include consciousness, memory, initiation of activity, emotional response, language and word associations.

A study of 12 healthy older adults, ages 60 to 80 years, was conducted by Feraz Rahman and colleagues at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Six subjects exercised over 3 hours a week in aerobic sports on a regular basis for 10 or more years, while the other six had exercised less than 1 hour a week during that period."
Only 12?
"'The numbers are small because it is hard to find healthy older adults who can participate ... especially inactive but still healthy older adults,' Rahman explained."
Bad.

And sad.

Workers with sleep apnea may take more sick leave

Kudos, fatsos.
"People with sleep apnea may be at increased risk of needing an extended sick leave from work or going on permanent work disability, a new study suggests.

Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, occurs when the soft tissues at the back of the throat temporarily collapse during sleep, causing repeated breathing interruptions. Major symptoms include loud snoring and daytime sleepiness -- the latter of which, studies show, may cause irritability, cloud thinking and concentration, or increase the risk of traffic accidents.

The extent to which OSA interferes with a person's ability to work has not been clear. But the new study, published in the European Respiratory Journal, suggests that the disorder can exact a large toll at work.

Norwegian researchers found that of more than 7,000 workers followed for four years, those with symptoms of OSA were nearly two thirds more likely to take a sick leave of more than eight weeks. They were also about twice as likely to go on permanent work disability."
And who gets OSA?

Fat folk!

Yale Researchers Discover New Molecule That May Suppress Hunger After Fatty Meals

More Yale-generated bulls**t that will never work.
"In the battle against obesity, Yale University researchers may have discovered a new weapon - a naturally occurring molecule secreted by the gut that makes rats and mice less hungry after fatty meals. The findings are published in the Nov. 26 issue of the journal Cell.

The report suggests the molecule may help regulate how much animals and people eat, according to the team headed by Gerald I. Shulman, Yale professor of medicine and cellular & molecular physiology and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.

Shulman's team studied a family of lipids called N-acylphosphatidylethanolamines, or NAPEs, which are synthesized and secreted into the blood by the small intestine after fatty foods are eaten. The team found that mice and rats injected regularly with NAPEs ate less food and lost weight. In addition, treatment with NAPEs appeared to reduce the activity of "hunger" neurons in the brain while stimulating activity in neurons that are believed to play a role in reducing appetite."
The only molecule that will workwith certainty and without side effects is an old one.

It is called SelfControlofMine.

Use it.

The Tongue Is The Start Of The Route To Obesity

No, it's the hand.
"Obesity gradually numbs the taste sensation of rats to sweet foods and drives them to consume larger and ever-sweeter meals, according to neuroscientists. Findings from the Penn State study could uncover a critical link between taste and body weight, and reveal how flab hooks the brain on sugary food.
'When you have a reduced sensitivity to palatable foods, you tend to consume it in higher amounts,' said Andras Hajnal, associate professor of neural and behavioral sciences at Penn State College of Medicine. 'It is a vicious circle.'

Previous studies have suggested that obese persons are less sensitive to sweet taste and crave sweet foods more than lean people. However, little is known about the specific differences between obese and lean individuals in their sense of taste and the pleasure they derive from sweet foods."
The tongue would be out of the loop if the hand did not lift the food to the mouth.
"Compared to the lean and healthy LETO rats, the taste responses in OLETF rats mirror those in obese humans. These rats have normal body weight at first, but they tend to chronically overeat due to a missing satiety signal, become obese and develop diabetes."
But there is one truth from this study. And it is not the plain speculation that rats "tend to chronically overeat due to a missing satiety signal."

Obese people are no smarter than lab rats.

My apologies to the rats.

Phone Helps Dieters Keep Pounds at Bay

Beyond stupid.
"A little support goes a long way. A new study shows that telephone counseling is as effective as in-person sessions in helping obese women keep pounds off and maintain a healthy lifestyle."
No, a lot of support goes a short way.
"For one year of follow-up, the women were divided into three groups.

One group received 15- to 20-minute telephone sessions biweekly from a counselor.

Another group got an hour in-person session every two weeks.

The third group received biweekly newsletters in the mail that provided diet and weight loss tips.

Researchers found that the two groups that got telephone counseling and face-to-face sessions regained less weight (2.6 pounds) than did the group that only got the newsletters (8.15 pounds).

And, telephone counseling was less expensive than the in-person sessions."
What these idiots are saying is that despite the money spent "counseling" the pigs in the study for one year, they regained weight and the only difference was a matter of about 5 pounds while still costing bucks.

And to hide the fact of the clear failures, they said telephone counseling was cheaper than the in-person sessions but did not comment on the cost of the newsletters.

No matter the way, the weight did not stay off.

This is the epitome of boondoggle sick care.

Get used to it. More real crap is coming.

And we are going to pay for it with our incomes, lives and by mortgaging the futures of our children.

Fast Food A Potential Risk Factor For Alzheimer's

Researching fast food as a potential risk for Alzheimer's proves researchers have Alzheimer's.
"Mice that were fed a diet rich in fat, sugar and cholesterol for nine months developed a preliminary stage of the morbid irregularities that form in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. The study results, published in a doctoral thesis from the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet (KI), give some indications of how this difficult to treat disease might one day be preventable.

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, there being roughly 90,000 patients with the disease in Sweden today. The underlying causes of Alzheimer's disease are still something of a mystery, but there are a number of known risk factors."
Like nothing having to do with fast food and everything, according to these morons, to do with the alleged macronutrient distribution in food.
"'We now suspect that a high intake of fat and cholesterol in combination with genetic factors, such as apoE4, can adversely affect several brain substances, which can be a contributory factor in the development of Alzheimer's,' says Susanne Akterin."
As if fat and cholesterol are only found in fast food.

But blame what you can in order to get more money for your bulls**t research.
"'All in all, the results give some indication of how Alzheimer's can be prevented, but more research in this field needs to be done before proper advice can be passed on to the general public,' she says."
See?

The Minimal Impact of a Big Hypertension Study

You really have to be a complete moron to believe that they will "cure" your overfatness with a pill.
"The surprising news made headlines in December 2002. Generic pills for high blood pressure, which had been in use since the 1950s and cost only pennies a day, worked better than newer drugs that were up to 20 times as expensive.

The findings, from one of the biggest clinical trials ever organized by the federal government, promised to save the nation billions of dollars in treating the tens of millions of Americans with hypertension — even if the conclusions did seem to threaten pharmaceutical giants like Pfizer that were making big money on blockbuster hypertension drugs.

Six years later, though, the use of the inexpensive pills, called diuretics, is far smaller than some of the trial’s organizers had hoped."
All they will cure is their own income deficit.

What you and the rest of us will get are ineffective pills for which we will pay through the nose.
"The aftereffects of the study show how hard it is to change medical practice, even after a government-sanctioned trial costing $130 million produced what appeared to be solid evidence...

Moreover, pharmaceutical companies responded by heavily marketing their own expensive hypertension drugs and, in some cases, paying speakers to publicly interpret the Allhat results in ways that made their products look better."
Which might not be such a bad idea if you fatsos could not swallow food when paying through the nose.

Unfortunately, it does not work that way.

People Wasting Billions Of Pounds On 'Quack' Health Food Products, British Medical Journal

News flash! The obvious is now obvious to some of the experts.
"Globally every year, obese people waste billions of pounds on food products that 'imply' that they aid weight loss, but are totally ineffective, says a nutritional expert on bmj.com today.

Professor Lean from the University of Glasgow, is hopeful that a new European Union (EU) Directive on Unfair Commercial Practices, adopted this year in UK, will finally protect vulnerable consumers who are tricked into to buying useless food products or supplements in attempts to combat their disease."
Great name, Prof. Lean.

And if you want to see some of the IMHO real killers and crooks in this game, go here to read FTC complaints filed about:
Oprah and Bob Greene
Oprah and her diet experts - Oz, Roizen, Katz, Cruise and Greene

If you agree, then contact FTC and complain about them.

Apparently FTC will only investigate if enough people complain.
