Can't Chalk It Up To "Baby Fat"

More ongoing malpractice from the sleazy pediatric medical community.
"Despite recent widespread media attention given to studies that have indicated one-third of American children have a weight problem, a new study shows just one-third of children who are overweight or obese actually receive that diagnosis by a pediatrician. The study, led by researchers at The MetroHealth System and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, also stresses that this failure to diagnose appears to mostly impact children who may most greatly benefit from early intervention. The study is published in the January issue of the journal Pediatrics...

'Despite having set pediatric BMI guidelines, this is a bit of a wake-up call to pediatricians that as many as 90% of overweight children are not being properly diagnosed,' said David C. Kaelber, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., lead author of the study, as well as an internist and pediatrician and chief informatics officer at MetroHealth and assistant professor of internal medicine and pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. 'Better identification of this group of children who have just crossed into the 'unhealthy' weight category is essential for early intervention which will hopefully prevent not only a childhood of increased health problems, but also what now often becomes an ongoing battle through adulthood with life-long issues.'"
This is hogwash, of course.

There is no "wake-up call" here.

Measuring BMI is not rocket science.

Neither is looking at a fat kid and concluding that something is wrong.

What is most likely happening is clear lawbreaking by those charged with reporting child abuse to the authorities, i.e., docs and nurses.

Why?

I suspect it is because they do not want to alienate a patient (or his/her guardian) by telling the truth since in a PC world, truth is considered a weapon of insult.

On a personal note, this is the reason I was provided by heretofore referring clinicians when I started the Fit To Parent (tm) Program years ago.

When I asked them why so few referrals came from them, the more open among them admitted fear of losing a patient.

So there you have it.

Docs complicit in child abuse for the bucks.

When healers are heels.
