Telephone calls from a nurse case manager helped reduce medical costs and hospital admissions for older type 2 diabetes patients, researchers said here.
All-cause inpatient admissions for patients who received weekly telephone calls from the nurse dropped from 1.029 per member per year to 0.774 (P<0.05), compared with a nonsignificant drop from 1.165 to 1.110 in the control group who received usual care, James Rosenzweig, MD, director of diabetes services at Boston Medical Center, reported.
Diabetes-related hospital admissions also dropped significantly in the intervention group, from 0.717 per member per year to 0.445, while there were no significant differences in the control group, Rosenzweig said at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society.
Costs would be cut even more if we simply stop supporting diseases of choice by paying the sick care bills of fat people.
