"To mark the beginning of International Walk to School month [1 - 31 October 2008], BMA Scotland has today (Wednesday 1 October) published a briefing paper highlighting the health and social benefits of encouraging children to have an active lifestyle.Exercise is a terribly inefficient way to manage weight.
Dr Dean Marshall, Chairman of the BMA's Scottish General Practitioners Committee, said:
'To maintain good health and stave off obesity and other serious illness in later life, it is recommended that children engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day, such as brisk walking, running, and sports.'"
And exercise while a child will not prevent weight gain later in life. To wit, all the fat adults who were not fat kids, many of whom exercised while they were children.
Even in the face of exercise it is necessary to exert caloric intake control since exercise burns a paltry few Calories at best. Even Michael Phelps has to consume fewer than or the same number of Calories that he burns to prevent weight gain.
This article demonstrates the type of moronic thinking that leads to the 3-4 HOURS of exercise per day recommended for adults.
Dean Marshall is the Dean of the School for Dummies.
