Here is a stress primer.
Stress is a demand placed on a physiologic system. Let's say that physiologic system is called a person. (stress can also be placed on non-physiologic systems, but is not germane to this conversation)
How a physiologic system, let's say a person, responds to stress is called strain.
When one trains properly, the response to the stress of training is called getting fitter.
When one studies properly, the response to the stress of studying is called getting smarter.
With me so far?
Most "stresses" cannot be controlled.
They come from without, not within.
If your boss is a jerk, you cannot control it.
If your bus is late, you cannot control it.
If your car has a flat, you cannot control it.
If your parent dies, you cannot control it.
With me so far?
What you can control, is how you respond to stress, i.e., strain.
You can control strain.
You can reduce strain.
Or you can cause yourself more strain.
"'Stress is a common problem in today's society, largely because increased pressure to perform on the job has created work/life imbalances,' Geithner said. 'Other major stressors include death of a spouse or family member, divorce, marriage, and personal injury or illness.' She also cited job demands, a move or change in a work or living situation, relationship issues or arguments, financial issues, and holidays as possible causes of stress.Training, not exercise will improve one's ability to handle the strain of stress.
Many methods of stress reduction exist, including breathing, meditation, progressive relaxation, and exercise. All tend to reduce anxiety, depression, heart rate and blood pressure, and enhance a feeling of relaxation and wellbeing.
'Exercise serves as a distraction from the stressor, and results in reduced muscle tension and cortisol secretion,' Geithner said. 'The additional benefit of exercise is that when done alone or used in combination with other stress reduction methods, it also improves physical fitness and has the potential for more profound effects on chronic disease risk reduction than other stress reduction strategies.'"
Exercise will likely cause increased strain since the disappointment of not achieving a goal will disappoint.
Unfulfilled expectation = frustration.
Get all the stress you can so you learn how to improve your handling of strain.
Training is one effective approach.
