This is not unique to them.
It is true for all weight loss programs based on the conventional stupidity. This includes diets from the sick care industry, Oprah and her experts, other diet gurus, etc.
This study is not a very good one, IMHO.
Yet there is some meaningful information for takeaway.
"These results imply that overweight, sedentary women joining a fitness center with the intent of weight loss or body fat change will likely fail without support and without altering their diets,' Ball said."Weight loss failure is a certainty for virtually all people without altering diet, i.e., caloric intake.
Support is unnecessary if one pursues a reasonable approach to weight loss and avoids the experts.
It is the severity of expert-recommended dieting that results in the need for support.
And as to exercise, it will never, ever work for weight loss in the absence of effective caloric intake control since exercise is a terribly inefficient way to burn Calories.
First, eat healthily to gain control over your Calories in.
Then, train, not exercise, to distribute your weight towards more lean and less fat.
Until you can control your Calories in, success will elude you.
And following Weight Watchers, or any other bulls**t weight loss program, is not the way to go.
