All the weight-related stuff is not "associated with" (a term of no value) but actually caused by consuming more Calories than are burned.
Nothing else.
You can sleep until the cows come home, but if you do not decrease your Calories in, you will still be fat.
In fact, if you sleep more as is suggested in the article, and do cut back on your Calories you will be obese-er, diabetes-er, high blood pressure-er, stroke-er and cardiovascular disease-er than before.
That is enough to make you depressed-er, a smoker-er and drinker-er.
Maybe the sleep experts need more rest since their thinking is getting stupider-er.
