Some people claim Elvis is alive.
"Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found that a single gene might control whether or not individuals tend to pile on fat, a discovery that may point to new ways to fight obesity and diabetes."Pursuing this will more likely "point to new ways to" kill, injure or harm people.
Remember, this finding "might control whether or not individuals tend to pile on fat."
Not that it does.
Also, it might be involved in other processes.
For example, it "might" negatively affect the ability to think.
In fact, just being exposed to it appears to have already had that effect on the researchers and reporters.
According to the article:
"'People who want to fit in their jeans might someday be able to overcome their genes.'"Cute.
Maybe the cancer that "might" result will cause weight loss.
It could happen.
And they will not see it coming.
Arguably this is a high and stupid price to pay for a better fitting piece of clothing.
"Dr. Graff said the next step is to understand better the exact mechanisms by which adipose exerts its control. "In our lifetimes, the likelihood of them ever understanding the "exact mechanisms" is close to zilch.
Knowing the other effects of this gene and the "exact mechanisms" are zilch.
It is time to stop all genetic and other research into overweight and obesity and just go for the mother lode.
It is time to research stupid and find a way to cure that.
Clearly, extincting stupid will have more and far-reaching effects, including cessation of stupid research and treatment endeavors.
All positive outcomes.
